COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Can an IPA be black? Semantics aside, this noir version has subtle coffee undertones born of a blend of oats with dark, Munich and crystal malts. What emerges is something deeper, less orthodox, and all its own. After 22 trial runs in our Bend and Portland pubs, we got it right.
Malt: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Chocolate Wheat, Black Barley, Flaked Oats, Toasted Oats
Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Citra

Bottle: Very dark brown with a thick tan head. Nose is ripe with hops; citrus and florals. Light chocolate and some roast. Very nice. The flavor is hop forward with mostly florals competing with a roasty background. Citrus and cocoa are again lightly present. Very nice.

pour the dark with a two inch thick head. wonderful strong hop aroma. a tasty dark malt and just enough bittering to make an ipa but not a hop bomb. this is my new favorite dark beer in the states. it is like dunkelweizen is to hefeweizen takes a good beer and makes it better.

Damn good black IPA and from what I understand one of the first. This was over a year old and kept its character well. Malty roastiness was present in the aroma with a hint of hops. Very dark color with a tan head. The carbonation held up well and the weight was medium with a dryness on the finish. Well balanced toast, woody with a tinge of sweet followed by a good amount of bitterness. This may have gotten a little better with age. Worth the trip.

Pours an opaque, very dark brown with a root beer head. Aromas of malted milk balls and cascade hops. The mouthfeel is soft and wet, but less viscous than the eyes would lead one to expect. A delightful mild carbonation scrub on the finish. Flavors are characterized by chocolate and tart citrus. Some floral essence as the olfactory becomes more involved in the taste. Lastly, a little smokiness that the hop bitterness tends to perpetuate. I’ve never been remarkably impressed with this beer. Don’t get me wrong, it’s better than average, but by Deschuttes standards, it is nothing about which to get too excited. Especially for the price.

Bottle @ Christers. Pours black with a creamy light brown head. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, caramel, fruity hops, peach. Flavor is malts, caramel, coffee, chocolate, licorice, bitter fruity hops. Medium to full body, lively carbonation, bitter finish. Maybe more stoutlike than a Black IPA. 170113

Pours dark dark brown with a tan head. Aromas of pine and citrus, roasted malt, and caramel. Taste of roasted malt (coffee, chocolate, caramel), grapefruit, orange, earthy, bitterness. Great CDA. Roasty malts over juicy hoppy IPA, but not in a discordant way.
