Commercial Description:
After months of experimentation, energy and obsession, Deschutes Brewery’s brewers have triumphed once again with their newest creation - Inversion IPA. Inversion’s trio of American hops delivers an over-the-top nose with hints of orange and grapefruit. Inversion is then dry-hopped for seven days resulting in an added hoppy kick. To balance the hop character of Inversion, Deschutes’ brewers used crystal and caraston malts that weave throughout the beer providing soft, complex caramel flavors. Inversion IPA is smooth and delicious. Just like clear days up on the mountain, Inversion IPA will deliver a path to higher ground. Inversion will be available year-round starting in early April on draft and in 6-packs. Inversion IPA is a phenomenal NW-style IPA, beckoning all beer drinkers and enticing IPA lovers to invert their world and find clarity above the routine of the everyday. Alc. By Vol. 6.8% IBUs 75

Good. Pretty strong caramel malt presence. Pretty bitter citrus hop flavor with a lingering bitter finish. Some alcohol taste comes through. Lightly carbonated and very drinkable. Thick mouthfeel for an IPA.

Picture perfect salmon-tinged amber pint with ample tan head of foam and fluff. Enjoyable citrusy and fruit punch burst in the nostrils along with some mild hop resin. Starts easy on the palate, but then raw, leafy hop notes and moderate to strong bitterness takes the stage. Resilient btter-sour twang on the back of the palate. I would conjecture there is a healthy dose of Chinook hops in this one.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with a nice frothy head and good lacing. Aroma is floral with citrus and hops, and inviting. Palate is light to medium with little carbonation. Hops and floral notes shine through in the flavor with some noticeable malt. Clear and clean flavors finish with lingering medium bitter hops. This is an enjoyable and refreshing beer.

On tap at the brewpub/public house in Portland. Copper and clear, with a very fruity aroma - grapefruit and pine. Medium body, with a nice resin sharpness that balances the malt sweetness.

12oz Bottle Best by 6/6/08 I get to try this courtesy of russpowell, thanks Russ! Inversion IPA pours amber that appears more copper when backlit. The body is very clear with absolutely no carbonation visible. A rather hard pour produced three fingers worth of creamy but craggy clean white head. The head fell painfully slow and left thick patchy lacing on its way. The smell is pretty unique. The hops take center stage just as they should with a lot of ripe fruitiness in the nose. Apricot, peach, and sweetened pink grapefruit are all accentuated by a slightly spicy alcohol presence that seems to bring them to the front. The maltiness seems to be more on the biscuity side. The more I smell this the more I like it. The first couple drinks I took I thought this was just ok. After digging in a little deeper I really start liking this IPA. All that fruitiness from the nose is right there in the flavor. The apricot is most prominent but not by much. The sweetened grapefruit is close behind and the peach makes an appearance but is on the mild side. The apricot comes through big on the swallow creating a flavor I really enjoy. The malts aren’t around much but there’s enough to add a little balance. Medium bodied with a quiet creaminess. The carbonation is on the low end of the spectrum and lets the beer work its way through as it pleases, which is just the way I like it. Smooth and mellow on its way through and leaves a growing bitterness as I work through the glass. I find this beer disappearing far too quickly. The more I drink the more I want to drink. My only worry is after drinking a couple bottles my tongue would be beat up well. I wasn’t so sure of Inversion at first but it didn’t take long for me to really start enjoying this beer. A really great, unique hoppiness combines with a great mouthfeel to make for a damn fine IPA. I’d love to be able to pick Inversion up around here. 5/11/08

Pretty sweet IPA from the folks at Deschutes. While there are plenty of hops, they don’t kill your palate or completely mask the malt-iness. I like almost everything I’ve tried by these guys and this is no exception.
