Commercial Description:
After months of experimentation, energy and obsession, Deschutes Brewery’s brewers have triumphed once again with their newest creation - Inversion IPA. Inversion’s trio of American hops delivers an over-the-top nose with hints of orange and grapefruit. Inversion is then dry-hopped for seven days resulting in an added hoppy kick. To balance the hop character of Inversion, Deschutes’ brewers used crystal and caraston malts that weave throughout the beer providing soft, complex caramel flavors. Inversion IPA is smooth and delicious. Just like clear days up on the mountain, Inversion IPA will deliver a path to higher ground. Inversion will be available year-round starting in early April on draft and in 6-packs. Inversion IPA is a phenomenal NW-style IPA, beckoning all beer drinkers and enticing IPA lovers to invert their world and find clarity above the routine of the everyday. Alc. By Vol. 6.8% IBUs 75

A good but not great IPA with big up-front hop aroma that doesn’t quite carry over to the taste.

Inversion IPA certainly satisfied my hop craving, and had some very interesting flavor notes. However, I found the bitterness to be rather rough - it didn’t have a lot of sweetness or other hop esters to balance the bitterness. Aside from the bitterness, I got a significant malt presence from the beer, and as it warmed I got some interesting flavor notes to include bubble gum, which I’ve not previously gotten from any beer. The beer poured from the bottle a rather bright orange with great sturdy head formation. Aroma was a lot of hop bitterness, with a minimal amount of fruit. Flavor is as I’ve described above. Mouthfeel is a bit rough, but not unpleasant. It is a bit hard to rate this beer. I thought it a bit unique among the hundreds of IPAs out there (interesting mouthfeel and flavors), but I found it only slightly above average when it comes to how much I enjoyed it. A nice beer - and I’d recommend it probably more than my numeric ratings would indicate.

This was an average IPA but I think I expected more. Not a bad brew though.

bottle from kenb: pours an orange cooper hue with a very small white head. aroma of caramel malt and sweet floral hops, with some citrus, also fresh fruit. flavour is an earthy hop bitterness with a real mice caramel malt that balances out the beer very well. finishes with some floral and citrus hop bitterness. very good and well balanced to me.

Bottle at "Stockholm Beer & Whiskey Festival 2007". Clear dark amber - light yellow head. Caramel, sweetness, dryness, malty, dark bread, grassy, piney, high hoppy. Dry finish.

Draft. American ipa. Sharp bitterness, with a malty, well balanced bitterness. Very nice hop profile.

Bottle. Amber color, aroma of slight pine, hops, citrus. Flavor was a subdued version of the aroma, has a nice bite to it, but it doesn’t annoy. Not bad.

Had this beer on 7/3/2006. Aroma has a nice maltiness to it with faint tones of hops on the back. Color is a deep golden with good carbonation and a nice tight head. Taste is soapy and bitter. Starting with a medium body it goes down with the bite of bitterness coming on. Finish comes on with a soap like taste that is followed by a sharp bitterness and ends with a taste that is like biting into the peel of an orange. All of this leaves you with a sharp bitter feel in the back of your mouth. It is way to bitter and unbalanced for me.
