Commercial Description:
After months of experimentation, energy and obsession, Deschutes Brewery’s brewers have triumphed once again with their newest creation - Inversion IPA. Inversion’s trio of American hops delivers an over-the-top nose with hints of orange and grapefruit. Inversion is then dry-hopped for seven days resulting in an added hoppy kick. To balance the hop character of Inversion, Deschutes’ brewers used crystal and caraston malts that weave throughout the beer providing soft, complex caramel flavors. Inversion IPA is smooth and delicious. Just like clear days up on the mountain, Inversion IPA will deliver a path to higher ground. Inversion will be available year-round starting in early April on draft and in 6-packs. Inversion IPA is a phenomenal NW-style IPA, beckoning all beer drinkers and enticing IPA lovers to invert their world and find clarity above the routine of the everyday. Alc. By Vol. 6.8% IBUs 75

12oz bottle. best before 6/30/07. pours clear golden-amber with white head. nose isnt very hoppy, subtle spicy and grapefruit hops. flavor is spicy and leathery hops, medium bitterness, and biscuit notes with cookie finish. this tastes more like an english-style ipa and a well done one at that. enjoyed.

A strange aroma really, my girlfriend said it smelt like a wet dog. Orange red appearance with a small head. Flavor is bitter, but not really citrus or pine, just a regular bitter beer flavor. Got a little caramel and vanilla from the malt, but this one is still strange to me. I would rather have a Mirror Pond or Black Butte.

A strongly bitter IPA, as much as an imperial. A good dose of malts to... problem is that the bitterness is not acompanied with a nice hop flavor, there is a very slight grapefruit and orange but not enough to balance out the bitterness. The palate is lightly sweet and tangy. Overall its above average but not top 10 on my IPA list.

Draft at Eichardt’s Sandpoint: Muddy and red. Sweet malty aroma. Likewise, a rich and malty drinker ... almost mediciney, though. Metallic. Blood orange and tangy. Almost too rindy. Fruity, but not enough of the fruit, if that makes sense. (#2910, 5/17/2007)

Not very fragrant, smells more of malt than hop. Nice, butterscotch-tangerine color and clear. The flavor just doesn’t cut it though, just not bold enough for IPA. Has an akward, lavernder-like smoothness on the palate (I’ve noticed this in Pyramid’s IPA too) that to me is not suitable for an IPA. I want my IPAs to sting at least a little, and this one doesn’t. Overall, a mediocre IPA. Maybe these guys have their porter recipe down cold, but I think they should change the IPA up a bit.

draft @ Fathers Office - i like that this IPA has a bit more of a malt backbone. much more color than you average IPA. taste definitely is bitter upfront with a strong grapefruit hops flavor....go figure for a PNW IPA. at times, it was a bit overpowering. however, as the beer warmed the flavor mellowed and balanced out much more and the palate felt creamier. very nice IPA.

Bottle. Very hoppy aroma of grapefruit with lychee, citrus, caramel, and dark-toned funk. Orange body with a lacing, rocky, creamy, tanned head. Loads of thick, almost syrupy hops in the taste, resin with a little grit upon swallow. Smooth body though, and fulll Strong bitterness with a light underlying sweetness. Very dry. Really, too hoppy. Deifnitely a sipper. Chewy, earthy, excellent. A designer dress but all business, too serious for frequent use.

12 Oz Bottle. Intense resin and hop cone pine sap, floral explosion. Dense and full of resin glands, in a land somewhere between grapefruit and cedar. Amber-orange, clearish, with soapy mass of golden-tinted head. Lacing beautifully. Flavor loses a lot of the initial hop character and slides into a more planty sweetness, with some wispy floral runs and a good candied hop cone sugar supporting. Bitterness builds over flavor as the beer settles on the tongue. Oranges and orange blossom honey perk up and join a nip of yeast and nisu for a run through the land of lemongrass. Chewy and mouth filling, yet maintaining and airy sense of drinkability. Rich. Filtering may either give it some fresh clarity and cleanliness, or reduce depth, hard to tell. Otherwise, nicely done.
