2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle to pint glass. Looks the part of a good IPA. All downhill after that, and I can’t quite explain it. Deschutes is a great brewery, ratings on this are bad. Maybe I got a bad 6 pack, because the 2 I’ve sampled have been extremely skunky and the hops are nowhere to be found. Very surprising. Will update if it turns out this was a "bad batch" (which happens to every brewer).

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle@home in a wine glass.
Pours well with nice aromas of cherry and citrus. Cloudy light orange/yellow in color. Mild bubbly head. Smooth on the palate, but hits you with an abrupt dose of hops.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
I liked this one. Enough hoppy citrus to bitter up the buds and the creamy malts smooth it all away. I was not expecting such a complex tasting brew when I popped the top. Descent off white head and plenty of aroma to keep the drinker interested during enjoyment.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle from sampler pack. Aroma is grapefruit and booze. Pours a dark amber with chunky head that clings and glistens. Taste is rich hops and some distinct malt carriage. Lingering malt flavors and bread cling to my palate. Overall, a solid contender.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from a bottle, San Diego. Sweet malty aroma with hops. Very well balanced hops, not too piney or anything. A bit creamy for an IPA. A solid beer.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: APR 8, 2006 Sampled a bottle of this new release. Poured into a glass and the color was a nice orange but the clarity was very mirky, much like an unfiltered beer. Mild hop nose, expecting more based on the product description and the dry hopping. Nice malt balance but some astringency in the taste as well as some medicinal notes. I like that they’re pushing the limits on IBU’s but I found the hop aftertaste a little offensive. Seems a little raw and tongue scraper-like. I imagine this might have been one of the first bottlings. Maybe I should have waited a month. I will wait awhile and try it once more to see if it’s more than an average IPA.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Pours a beautiful cloudy gold, with some red an yellow play in the light. Head is about 2 inches and cream colored, pretty dense, takes awhile to dissipate. Good lacing on surface and on sides of glass. Nose is strong citrus and hops, the citrus is almost too strong. Tastes is of citrus and hops. The bitterness and acidity are balanced well. Has a pretty clean finish with a bit of alcoholic bite, and a very nice mouthfeel for an IPA. Deschutes makes great beers.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
A good but not great IPA with big up-front hop aroma that doesn’t quite carry over to the taste.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Light amber pour with moderate foamy off-white head. Grapefruit and pine aroma with some light caramel malt presence. Taste is a fairly nice blend of resiny pine, light grapefruit and some sweeter malts making their way through. Overall, a pretty mainstream IPA but still quite drinkable.
