Commercial Description:
After months of experimentation, energy and obsession, Deschutes Brewery’s brewers have triumphed once again with their newest creation - Inversion IPA. Inversion’s trio of American hops delivers an over-the-top nose with hints of orange and grapefruit. Inversion is then dry-hopped for seven days resulting in an added hoppy kick. To balance the hop character of Inversion, Deschutes’ brewers used crystal and caraston malts that weave throughout the beer providing soft, complex caramel flavors. Inversion IPA is smooth and delicious. Just like clear days up on the mountain, Inversion IPA will deliver a path to higher ground. Inversion will be available year-round starting in early April on draft and in 6-packs. Inversion IPA is a phenomenal NW-style IPA, beckoning all beer drinkers and enticing IPA lovers to invert their world and find clarity above the routine of the everyday. Alc. By Vol. 6.8% IBUs 75

Hazy amber color, small off white head that had a decent hangtime then faded slowly to leave a slight lace behind. The aroma was hoppy with a nice citrus side and some notes of pine and light malt. The flavor was pretty good, light malty side some grapefruit a bit of caramel and a hint of pine notes to go along with all the hops.Very nice brew, not as good as the avery i just had but decent enough for another go around.

Picture perfect salmon-tinged amber pint with ample tan head of foam and fluff. Enjoyable citrusy and fruit punch burst in the nostrils along with some mild hop resin. Starts easy on the palate, but then raw, leafy hop notes and moderate to strong bitterness takes the stage. Resilient btter-sour twang on the back of the palate. I would conjecture there is a healthy dose of Chinook hops in this one.

Draft. Rich amber beer with a big off-white head. Citrus/pine hop flavor with some cocoa/chocolate backing. Citrus hop aroma that could be a bit stronger. Medium bodied, easy drinking, dry finish.

Pours a hazy copper amber with a nicely lacing finger-width thick off-white head. Fresh grapefruity citrus hoppy aroma has a touch of sweet caramel maltiness and some earthier grassy piny hop components too. Body starts lightly sweet and malty with some grittiness and a bitter citrusy hoppy balance. Finishes bittersweet and drier hiding its alcohol well. A decent IPA.

I am immediately impressed with the aroma - fresh grapefruit for sure, but perhaps a touch sour. The beer encompasses the grapefruit in the flavor quite well and the malt keeps the hops grounded as the brewers designed, although there is a smokiness in the malt that when combined with the grapefruit gives a slighty unpleasant spiciness. Good hop tea despite the malt setback.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of hops, light caramel, slight toasting, a hint of bready malts. Poured orange/amber in color with a small, off-white head that lasted throughout. Clear. Slightly sparkling. Small lacing. Flavor is medium bitter. Tastes of hops, pale malts, slight pine, toasting, and a hint of citrus. Medium body. Oily texture. Soft to average carbonation. Hoppy, light malt finish is lightly bitter.

The beer smells of bananas and pith. Slight caramel malt comes out in the front of the flavor, but the lingering bitterness is just harsh and doesn’t fit with the rest of the beer.

Tasted 15/09/2006. 12oz bottle from BrewNZ. Late at night with Brendon and Steve, after a few Limburg Oude Reserve’s, so the notes are minimal (and hard to read). Deep rose gold, some may say amber. Bright. Off-white head rises and disappears like coke. Toffee malt plus floral and grapefruit hops on the nose, quite pungent. Dry caramelised malt flavour is hardly detectable with all that grapefruit hop flavour and the obscene bitterness... wow! A real tongue number - as Greig McGill called it. I hope Neil Miller got some of this.
