Tap @ Kahootz: Black color like a stout with a body like a Barley Wine. It doesn’t have much of a head which is fine with me, more of the brew to enjoy. Super tasty - splinters, sweetness, prunes, low alcohol flavor with a sweet hop finish. The body is extremely thick which resembles the BW. Absolutely delightful!

A: The pour is a dark mahogany color with a thin off-white head and some surprising lacing on the glass.
S: The nose has a slight oxidation note to it, which actually works somewhat well with the sugary, caramel, and dark fruit notes. There’s some noticeable alcohol as well.
T: The flavor is also quite sweet. The caramel and toffee are the most present with the sugar more subdued. Unfortunately, I don’t pick up quite as much in terms of fruit, but I do seem to notice some herbal and buttery qualities. Once again, the alcohol is present.
M: The body is medium to full with a moderate level of carbonation.
D: This is a bit too hot for my tastes. Perhaps it might calm down in a few years, but just a couple ounces is fine for now.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 raphael (665) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAR 3, 2010
On tap at Mickey Finn’s. Was told it was 10 years old, which would be amazing, but here i see its not true. A spicy, plum pudding, molasses, yet not sweet aroma. Darkest brown-red, minimal head. tastes sweeter than it smells, aspects of regular jubel, plus alcohol, well-balanced and -crafted. Sweet finish.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 after4ever (4500) - Brier, Washington, USA - MAR 2, 2010
22, capped and waxed. Pours jet black with a dense, creamy, fizzy tan head that fades quickly to not much at all. Lots of splotchy lace. Big boozey perfumey brown sugar and vanilla nose. Creamy medium body, rather flat. Roast, dark chocolate, wood, vanilla, and dark fruit on the mid palate. Big dry freshcut dark wood finish. Flavorful and appealing, but not exactly a masterpiece of subtlety.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 yemenmocha (657) - Glendale, Arizona, USA - FEB 28, 2010
Virtually no head, even with a vigorous pour. Nose has an appetizing mixture of dark berries and maple syrup - almost reminding me of such toppings I had not long ago on a stack of flapjacks. Those berry flavors with maple syrup are salient on the palate as well with a rich, sweet roasted malty core. Finish has dark fruits and a kiss of alcohol warmth to remind you this is no little beer.

Pours a thick dark brown with tan head. Notes of dark fruit and molases in the nose. Flavor is sweet, a little cloying. Finishes clean. Notes of tanins, wood, spruce, leather and dark fruit.

Bottle:   Deep brown, garnet hues, moderate to large frothy beige head, pancake batter like lacing.   Super malty nose, slight gingerbread aroma, aged dark pitted fruit, strong biscuitiness.   This should be interesting.   Sweet and malty on the tongue.   Sweet pale fruitiness, not as heavy with the dark pitted fruit as I had gotten on the nose.   A little warming, and certainly no indication that this is a 10% ABV beverage.   In fact, it feels like maybe a 7 or 8% beer.   Extremly smooth, body and mouthfeel are both silky and a bit heavy.   Better tasting than the tongue suggests.   The backside has a heavy dark pitted fruit aspect, but without the heavy breadiness associated with other Strong Ales.   Minor astringency on the backside.   Cellaring for a bit may diminish that.   Not as special as I thought it was going to be.   Decent, clean finish, but doesn’t have a complexity of flavors that I was hoping.   Overally fairly simple, yet clean.

Tap @ The Eastburn... Poured deep, ruby/burgundy, mahogany, with a thin, off-white head. Caramel and toffee flavor with a subtle ginger-like spice. Slightly bitter, tiny bit of alcohol that was balanced by malts. Hops there too, but stayed in the back. Sugary sweet finish with a hint of oak. Earlier Rating: 1/5/2009 Total Score: 3.7 Tap @ their Portland Public House... Poured deep ruby with a beige head. Aroma of licorice and brown sugar. Dry palate with a decent amount of carbonation that was evident in the back of the tongue. Very spicy (obviously) with licorice flavors and other seasonal spices. It was great because the spices weren’t overbearing. Herbal and earthy finish.
