3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Clear red brown pour with a thick tan head and nice lacing. Grapey, leather, oak with a very soft mouth feel. A slighty booze and sweet finish. Overall, A little too sweet for my liking but well done.

22oz bottle from Beerhive Pub in SLC. Bottle says best after 1/29/11. Pours super dark amber with a slight golden tint. Medium mocha head that fades somewhat quickly. Aroma is... wow. Rich bourbon, licorice, leather, molasses all jump out. Taste is big, dark caramel malts with brown sugar sweetness, a hint of vanilla, and just enough hops for balance. Not that different from Jubelale, just cranked up rich malts, extra abv, and the barrel aging that gives it all those wonderful notes. Thinner body than you’re expecting from the smell. It’s hard to be neutral about this one - this is one of my favorite beers ever. The only negative I’ll throw out there is that Deschutes will apparently only make this every 10 years. It’s way too good for that and should join their once per year reserve series with Abyss, Black Butte XX*, etc. Or at least every other year like they’re doing with The Dissident.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A - Pours a dark brown with a bit of ruby around the edges and a finger of frothy khaki colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of dark caramel malts and dark fruits with some brown sugar, oak, red grapes, vanilla, and a bit of booze.
T - Starts off with a mix of dark fruit and dark caramel malts with a bit of licorice and vanilla. Through the middle, some more raisin and other dark fruits come through with some red wine grapes, oak, and brown sugar. Finish is a mix of molasses, dark fruit, dark caramel malts, oak, red wine grape, and a bit of booze.
M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and a bit syrupy with a warming and sweet finish.
D - Very drinkable. Really nice overall balance. The barrel adds some nice character next to the malty base beer.

So glad I had an opportunity to taste this storied, legend-esk beer. Nice toasty nuts and grains mixed with dark fruit, sweet malt and hootch.

Beautiful chocolate brown pour from bomber into sniffer. Tan head leaves lots of lacing on the glass. Smells like liquefied toffee, surrounded by dark fruits and caramelized sugar. Aroma reminds me strongly of Rochefort 10 for some reason. Taste is holding up well. A bit of smoke, no hoppiness, raisin, bing cherry, bitter chocolate, caramel. Tastes like a really well made English barleywine. Still holding up well.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. Pours clear very dark copper color with thin tan head. Aromas of caramel, sugar, oak, and alcohol. Sweet caramel and toffee flavors with dark fruits and oak. Alcohol burn is noticeable. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation. Thanks Craig.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
2010 Bottle. Fantastic nose of smoky breakfast - bacon, maple, some woodiness. Pours a red-brown with slight head and lacing. The taste follows the nose, with some added carmel. Drinks very easy with a nice finish. Probably worth a trip back to the whole in the wall liquor store I found it at for another bottle.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Lots of dark fruits, chocolate, toffee and warm vanilla. Hints of wine and wood.
Taste and feel follow the nose very much. Body is a bit thinner than expected and the alcohol does have a good punch. Solid sipper weather it is a barleywine or a strong ale.

22 oz. bottle from kmweaver- thanks again! Best after 1/29/2011. I also felt the need to put "2010" in my notes for some reason. Pours a dark brown-amber color with a finger of beige head. Notes of chocolate, roasted malts, nuts, dark fruits, oak, earth, and toasted brown sugar. Medium-bodied, with a nutty, toasty mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Good beer that doesn’t really adhere to any style.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a dark dark black with mild foam. Has a nice oak taste, with butterscotch, raisin, and slight vanilla. It aged very nice. The alcohol is a little predominate but overall another great beer from Deschutes.
