4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 ACHops (282) - Seattle, Washington, USA - AUG 1, 2012
22oz bottle from Beerhive Pub in SLC. Bottle says best after 1/29/11. Pours super dark amber with a slight golden tint. Medium mocha head that fades somewhat quickly. Aroma is... wow. Rich bourbon, licorice, leather, molasses all jump out. Taste is big, dark caramel malts with brown sugar sweetness, a hint of vanilla, and just enough hops for balance. Not that different from Jubelale, just cranked up rich malts, extra abv, and the barrel aging that gives it all those wonderful notes. Thinner body than you’re expecting from the smell. It’s hard to be neutral about this one - this is one of my favorite beers ever. The only negative I’ll throw out there is that Deschutes will apparently only make this every 10 years. It’s way too good for that and should join their once per year reserve series with Abyss, Black Butte XX*, etc. Or at least every other year like they’re doing with The Dissident.

First, woo! Bomber pours a very dark, reddish brown with little retaining tan head into a snifter; nice lacing. Fantastic aroma of plumb, dates, brown sugar, red apple, pear, woody, vanilla with a touch of booze. Seems like a Belgian strong dark ale. The aroma intrigued me from the start... smelled it for some time before taking a sip.
Hallelujah the nose did not disappoint! Deep caramel malty sweetness with accompanying brown sugar. The fruits are well integrated: plumb, apple, pear, apricot. A bit of roastiness with a woody/earthy touch come through with vanilla in the finish. The booziness is pleasant and warming. Thankfully, this gets even better as you drink with toffee, vanilla and raisin taking the forefront. Full bodied with a silky mouthfeel and a low level of carbonation. Thank the failed burglar (and of course the guys at Deschutes!) for this utterly fantastic brew.

This is a great beer. Heavy but in a non-overly hopped or overly malty way. A bit creamy almost but certainly true to the original jubelale flavor but in a much-improved way. Very tasty.

Whoa, incredible stuff! I let it warm a bit out of the fridge and then poured a glass of huge thick, foamy, frothy, sudsy, light tan head and lots of lace. Color is a very cloudy orange brown. Aroma is heavy on dark ripe fruit, yeast, toffee, malt. and a hint of cocoa. Flavor is similar to nose, but in some odd way, more muted and balanced; all of those characteristics are there but in a seamless whole. Body is voluptuous and carbonation is spot on. Finish is like flavor, with an emphasis on yeast, longish, and without much alcohol. Good and gnarly.

Pours this rich, deep dark amber color producing a one finger pancake that leaves a little early, but she leaves her scarf around the edges to remember. Prolific aromas smelling sweet and sticky ripe cherry and plumb, cold moist cakebread, and a pinch of sour. Full and luscious on the palate with good carbonation. I taste all kinds of stuff here from chocolate cakebread to grapes and plumbs to roasted coffee bean and toffee. There a slight hop notch to it and some acid surfaces on the finish that lingers forever. I throw a bunch of these out of sight for a few years. Very complex beer.

2010 Bottle. Aroma has notes of dried dark fruits, caramel, chocolate, oak wood and vanilla. Great nose! Very dark brown hue that sits black in the sniffer. Small off-white head that mostly diminished and left very little lace. Flavor is sweet and toasty with a sweet finish. Palate is very full bodied and oily soft with a slightly cloying finish. Overall a sublime brew that just delivers huge barley wine flavors and aromas. Just delicious!

At a tasting, thanks david, small dense beige head, deep burgundy red colour, some hoppy aroma at first, then biscuity malt and jam take over, flavours of cherry liquor, cognac and plums with vinous and oaky notes, wouldn’t be suprised if it was aged in wine oak barrels, alcohol quite noticable at first, then mellows out but never abrasive, long sweet alcoholic aftertaste. A wonderfull digestif.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a nice ruby red body with thick tan head. Aroma caramel malts, spices, and of a mixture of fruits, mainly raisin, plum, and hints of cherry. Flavor is the same as the aroma, although I get some chocolate/cocoa and molasses tones. Medium to heavy body; smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Nicely carbonated with a coffee and dark fruit finish. The alcohol is well hidden, although there is a slight burn on the back of the throat on the aftertaste. Very tasty and deceptively easy to drink.

Bottle. Pours a beautiful pinot/brown with a tan lacing left by the medium head. Smells of Pine and red berry fruits, cheerful and warm. Very inviting.
Tastes of cherry and caramel with a nutty backbone. Alcohol is there but very well integrated, not off putting but a welcome enhancement to this "winter" special. 4 left, will re-visit in one year and again in another year etc.

22 ounce bottle purchased at the Davis Food Co-op. Best After 01/29/11. Beautiful aroma with sweet sugary notes, caramels, leathers, and raisins. I also detect some cherry nuances in there as well. A little ethanol retronasally, but very quaffable. Transparent dark cola colored body with a nice, strong, light brown head present. Lots of chewy maltiness. Some sweet brown sugar comes in to start, before this takes on a great molasses-like flavoring in the middle. Some more sweet pitted fruits and raisins make an appearance, before this become a little roasted anc chocolatey to finish. Ethanol is well-hidden. Very smooth and creamy, and a real pleasurable brew.
