4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
aroma is raisins, rum soaked fruitcake, fruity amongst a more focused darkness. big malty sweetness with hints of wood. appearance is opaque with browned edges, tiny wispy pockets of head across the top and low carb. flavor is booze made pleasant amongst the woody stickiness and fruity notes that poke through with glee. plums, raisins, figs, general stone fruits, grilled apricots. mouthfeel is as expected for beer of this gravity and ABV, silky across the palate and you can almost feel the fumes of the liquor, enjoyable to the jaded tounge though it sounds harsh. trappist in more ways then one, i had my typical session tulip on hand and noticed the recommendation to use a trappist glass. i never look at this and rarer still heed it but in this case i did, it works and is quite fitting.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle I think I picked up in Vegas right before we moved and am now drinking in Ohio. This is like a barley wine meets molasses. I thought it was pretty tasty and the 11ABV was deeply hidden. I’ll be waiting for 2020 for sure!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Upon pour there was an instant aroma of sweet malts and cotton candy, but there was a whiff of beer that smelled similar to a barley wine. Liquid was a deep shade of mahogany with a firm layer of thin film head. The flavor was sweet and sticky and had a heavy backbone of malts with an addition of fig, cigar and a minor background of root beer. Such a good beer.

Thanks to BOLTZ7555 (JBOLT...trade with him now!!) and Chase for sharing. Ruby red pour, not going down hill for those that have claimed this needs to be cracked now. Nice Carmel notes, sweet, smooth, mild carbonation, one of my favourite beers of the night.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma is rich and malty. There is lots of caramel notes of varying degrees of darkness. Moderate toffee and moderately light chocolate also compliment the caramel. There is a hint of roast present as well. Some dark fruit - cherries, figs and prunes along with a light sherry note and a hint of alcohol.
Pours brown with ruby highlights and a light brown head of moderate thickness with a hint of red. The head recedes fairly quickly to the edges leaving a thin film on top in the center. No lacing and medium sized legs.
Flavor is a bit more muted in malt than the aroma but there is still a lot of sweet dark caramel, some toffee, hints of burnt sugar, some light chocolate and roast. The flavor is much more fruit forward with lots of cherry, plum, berry and fig. The sherry note is present in the flavor as well. Moderate bitterness to balance the sweetness and a medium low alcohol spice in the finish that becomes more prevalent as the beer warms. As it warms the malt character also starts to overshadow the fruit notes which is nice.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with moderate carbonation. There is a lore but present astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. The beer is sweet but it doesn’t come across as too sticky.
Overall a nice beer but I much prefer the aroma to the flavor. The fruit notes add a touch of acidity which isn’t playing well with the bitterness and sherry. The beer improves as it warms but I can’t help but wonder whether this bottle is in a middle year where the flavors are clashing with the age. Maybe with more time the age would settle in nicely.
