This ‘Super Jubel’ was discovered by accident two decades ago when a clumsy burglar didn’t realize the weight of his stolen keg of Jubelale. He dropped it outside to freeze in the season’s sub-zero temperatures – only to be discovered the next morning by Gary Fish, Deschutes Brewery owner. More than half the liquid in the keg had frozen and the remaining beer was a very cold, highly concentrated ‘Jubelale on steroids.’ It was so good that the brewers set about recreating it, coming up with an annual ‘Super Jubel’ that is aged in oak barrels. A limited amount has been available on tap every year, 2010 will be only the second time that the brewery has bottled up this brew for sale. The first time it was available by bottle was a special millennium edition in 2000.

Pours tawny with vibrant clarity and fine carbonation. Sour cherry and supple leather aromas follow in flavor, along with a supporting note of horseblanket. Tastes like it may be past its prime, as body is a bit thin with a slightly solventy finish.

Pours a dark amber brown color with a khaki head. Oak, bourbon, toffee, caramel, toast, molasses, and dark fruit aroma. Oak, bourbon, vanilla, toffee, toast, tabacco, caramel, molasses, alcohol and dark fruit. On draft at city beer.

Bottle. A vigorous pour begets a one-finger soap bubble head the color of ginger. The liquid’s too dark to see through except when held to the light. Clear and effervescent. Red wine and cola in color. In the nose: vanilla, cola, burnt brown sugar, raisins, and bourbon. Noticeable alcohol heat. Flowery hops. Spicy yeast. In the flavor: Sweet prunes, vanilla, pepper, and caramel. Dr. Pepper! Super hot; you can feel the alcohol heat travel all the way down to the stomach. The slightest hint of roasted malts. Bitterness clings to the back sides of the tongue. Medium body, medium carbonation. Smooth, buttery. Wow.

Very dark brown pour, big tan head. Sweet aroma of molasses, flavor is big and sweet of molasses, spices and soy sauce. Fantastic.

(bottle - 22 oz - 2010 vintage) Murky copper pour with a thin tan head. Fruity and malty aroma with lots of caramel and still some good alcohol. Lots of different fruits in the flavor with a middle that seems to be a combination of toffee and caramel. Finishes sweet and fruity.

Sat on this for 5 years before cracking it open. Creamy first impression, drinks more like a quadruppel than anything else I can think of.

Draft at GABBF: Poured a murky brown with a tan head. Aroma was sweet malt and spices. Taste was strong caramel and toffee malt, light spice, and has this core warming alcohol appearance.

Pours a hazy dark child color with a small ring. Rich malt, brown sugar, rich fruit. The taste is, rich fruit, caramel, somewhat oxidized. The body is medium and nearly flat.

Let this one sit for a solid 4+ years. Thanks for the wax seal </sarcasm> wasn’t annoying at all to open. Anyway. Little aroma (but low carbonation from the aging) still low aroma. Low level faults but the dive into an amazing beer. Maybe the aging helped, but nevertheless, this has a fine, blurred alcohol with malt, mild bitterness, tasty after tones. This might have needed the again, but either way it benefited. The aroma isn’t bad, but you really have to work to get it.

Draft at Fiddler’s. Lovely clear amber pour with offwhite head that dissipates to a ring. A smidge of lacing. Aroma brings lots of caramelized brown sugar; hop presence is there (surprisingly); caramel and candi. Taste: sweet, rich caramelized sugar and toffee. A beer whose style really may be best described as "winter warmer." Balanced by moderate bitterness. Sweet and strong, but no alcohol burn. Palate: full sticky body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Overall: this is a nice one. I may be biased by the fact that I’m out at a neighborhood joint without a child on a Saturday night. But I don’t think so. Not an everyday beer, but if I was in a ski lodge and it was snowing, this could be the perfect beer.

On draught at 2014 Holiday Ale Festival. Amber dark brown color. Aroma is vanilla, roasted nuts, toffee, and very dark malts. Taste is spiced rum, bourbon, roasted malt, and pitted fruit. Strong, smooth sipping warmer.
