COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ‘Super Jubel’ was discovered by accident two decades ago when a clumsy burglar didn’t realize the weight of his stolen keg of Jubelale. He dropped it outside to freeze in the season’s sub-zero temperatures – only to be discovered the next morning by Gary Fish, Deschutes Brewery owner. More than half the liquid in the keg had frozen and the remaining beer was a very cold, highly concentrated ‘Jubelale on steroids.’ It was so good that the brewers set about recreating it, coming up with an annual ‘Super Jubel’ that is aged in oak barrels. A limited amount has been available on tap every year, 2010 will be only the second time that the brewery has bottled up this brew for sale. The first time it was available by bottle was a special millennium edition in 2000.

Pours tawny with vibrant clarity and fine carbonation. Sour cherry and supple leather aromas follow in flavor, along with a supporting note of horseblanket. Tastes like it may be past its prime, as body is a bit thin with a slightly solventy finish.

[Tap] Snifter at a Deschutes tap event. Tasting notes from 2012. Nearly black pour. Low carbonation and very little head. Dark fruits, fig, fruitcake and alcohol in the nose. Flavor notes include molasses, dark fruits, almond, pine sap, brown sugar and raisins. Nice balance and coating mouthfeel. Sweet finish allows more alcohol to be featured. Good stuff.

Bottle @tasting. Pours black with a shade of purple about it. Sherry and cherry on the nose. One hell of a nose at that. Toffee , plums and dates also some vanilla, a very complex taste palate, wonderful.

Slightly cloudy and light brown. Ringed off white head. Lovely rich, redcurrant and light steely but bright maltiness. Backlit booze. Oily, light nutmeg and easy spice. Rich and tense sweetness. Lovely light cinnamon and a firm finish.

A dark brown ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet vinous malt with treacle, scotch character, grassy hops, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity vinous malt with treacle, grassy hops, molasses, very nice for the age. Xmas Ottawa gathering Dec 13 2013.

Well, I’ve had this a few times, and figured it was time to review. Pours dark brown with a mahogany tone with light, little latte rim and bubbles. Smells magnificent. Sweet molasses, candy, caramelized sugar, plums, brown sugar, malt, malt, malt - so delicate and sumptuous. Flavor follows with the same and add in some really nice nougat flavors and cola flavors. Medium on light syrup body with moderate carb and semi dry finish, this hits the spot. I’m glad to have a few more bottles. Really coming into it’s own right now. A really nice beer. Pours dark dark amber with a bit of off white head. Smell sweet fig, cross between a quad and barley wine. Taste buttered toast and caramel. Toffee, cream, vanilla, sweet boozy red fruits. Tough drinking, big bodied. Not that great
