Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 13, 2008 Pours a lovely chocolate brown with white head and a glassfull of web-and-dot lacing. Aroma, initially very delightful, still malty and spicey as it airs out. Taste is chocolate, more thick initially and then middling. Dry taste, a bit of an old ale, but never drying. Rich and interesting. 2007 version. Thanks Dr. Jay. tuohyam (14), Enumclaw, Washington, USA Jul 13, 2008 A very impressive winter seasonal. Great taste. Only overshadowed in my mind by the Pyramid Snowcap in terms of west coast beers. fidel (886), Livermore, California, USA Jul 13, 2008 Updated: Sep 14, 2008Dark amber, Chocolate, dark fruits, Caramel, malty, spicey, little hop, dry. GarrettB (494), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 2, 2008 I think much stronger juices are in need for instant jubilation, but I immediately take a liking to the carefree package design on this Deschutes beer. The body is a rich, dark cherry body, clear but very dark. The head is diminutive, almost puny on such a dark beer body, but throttles the glass in a wicked strong lacing. Thus, when the lumpy, bubbly and balsa wood colored head slowly pops and recedes, you know very clearly where on the glass it started. The smell is, at first, dusty and dirty - memories of mountain-biking in Moab surface. But a little patience yields, cream, truffle, pear juice and orange rind. The taste is very different, taking a malty, slightly sweet milk chocolate stand. Add in a touch of grape soda sugar and a slightly overwhelming carbonation and there’s my Jubelale. Nice aroma, but the flavor is too generic to stand out from the hordes of other winter time beers micro breweries love to produce. vulcanmeister (102), La Grande, Oregon, USA May 31, 2008 Pours dark amber from the bottle with a nice light beige head. Aroma is bread, chocolate, and fruit (grapefruit?). Flavor is rich with chocolate, dark fruitiness, caramel, and pine. Delicious sweetness and maltiness that just goes on and on. Cheers! Shag (1922), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA May 17, 2008 2007 Vintage. This poured a dark brown color with a beige head. The aroma is chocolate, toffee, caramel, and maple syrup. The flavor contains a hint of dark fruit and also some chocolate, caramel, raisins, and toffee. The body is a bit light on this one. The aftertaste is rather dry considering. Overall a pretty good beer. CharlesDarwin (1823), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA May 16, 2008 2007. 12oz Bottle. Nice caramel and grass nose. Chewy toasted malts bind with a bit of honey and maple syrup, supporting some faint hoppiness. Nice glow. Pours a clear blood red, with edges in brown and soapy khaki head. Flavor is weak ass. All this build up to malt evaporates into thin, astringent roast and burnt caramel. A touch of popcorn. Watery. Hops are grassy and ride some overly hot alcohol. Majorly underwhelming. Soapy, lightly metallic and backed only briefly with a bit of fruit and sweetness. Dusty on the smack. Not good. I get the feeling that something has changed, because how can this particular vintage possible be representative of a beer in the top percentile for the style? Thanks Sean! rudolf (1734), Buffalo, New York, USA May 11, 2008 2007 bottle. Cloudy mahogany, tan head. Nose is toffee, alcohol & hops - lots of hops. Flavor is roasty malt, hops, pine, some raisin. Overly bitter.
