shp555 (1678), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 10, 2008 Pours a hazy amber color with a tan head. Aroma is malty, caramel, crystal malts, and some earthy hops. Flavor is crystal malts, toast, caramel, and a bitter earthy citrus finish. ATLBeerDog (280), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 10, 2008 Pours a beautiful rust caramel color with a slight head, and light lacing and slightly under carbonated. Smells of bourbon and hops, and hints of wood. Taste of rich malts, wood, and bourbon. Not a very strong ale at 6.7%. Not bad and fairly balanced. sloth (1658), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA May 9, 2008 Medium sized tan head, good retention and a fair lacing. Murky brown color, light orange hue. Nose is lightly fruity with light caramel malt notes.Body is medium with a gentle carbonation, lightly oily on the palate. Light caramel malt flavors, light spiceyness and citrus notes, lightly bready. Fairly dry, lightly fruity finish. An easy quaffing brew. Props to jake65 for the bottle. 06 vintage BlackDonald (1127), Boise, Idaho, USA Apr 29, 2008 This is a great beer, that I always look forward to its release in December. This kind of walks the line as others have said between a sipper and something that could be drank quite easily. it is great at a cooler temperature for everyday drinking, but is also quite complex at room temperature for sitting outside on the porch in colder weather as a sipper. Light dark fruits lead into a great mouthfeel of molasses and sweet toffee, but its only their for a moment, as the finish is quite dry and bittersweet chocolate, with some cocoa dusting on the tongue. Great drinkability. rayOfBeer (316), El Cerrito, California, USA Apr 24, 2008 2007 version poured from 12oz brown with medium sized tan head which fades quickly. Nose of straw, darkfruit (raisins, prunes, pear) and toasted malt. The flavor checks in with molasses, straw/hay, roast coffee, toast and some bittersweet chocolate. There is an underlying sweetness but mostly dry roasted bitter with good acidity and a powdery finish. This beer has a heavy filling feel to it with some noticiable alcohol in the finish. Good taste but a slow sipping beer only. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Apr 11, 2008 On cask at Horse Brass. Pours a deep dark reddish brown with nary a sign of a head. The nose is deeply infused with dark fruits. Figs, prunes, especially. Rather sweet. A light hint of a suggestion of spice, but I doubt there’s any actual spice in this. Very subtle floral hops. No alcohol character noted, so I’m surprised this is called an English strong... but then I see the ABV now! Flatter thinner mouthfeel, duh, it’s on cask. Not as watery as those tend to be. The flavors are just as the nose suggests, perhaps sweeter. The prunes take over the figs entirely. Maybe some raisin. Some caramel. No real chocolate, maybe a hint of roast. Floral hjops pop a bit more. A tasty yummy beer, but not one I’d drink a ton of in a sitting. voota (761), Melbourne, Australia Apr 10, 2008 Ruby brown with a big tan head. Really ’old’ almost (but not) oxidised aroma, lots of sultanas, oak, fruitcake mix (brown sugar and butter etc.), cinnamon, the list goes on... its wonderfully complex. Smooth mouthful, a touch sour perhaps but I cant figure that out too well, a touch of warmness and a lot of bitterness which I think draws away from the beer a little. Flavours of dry fruits and molasses, a bit of banana, very nice but not as great as the aroma. The finish shows more bitterness which is almost annoying, excellent and complex otherwise.
