bhensonb (4187), Woodland, California, USA Jul 11, 2006 Chocolate toffe aroma with a long lasting tan head. Deep red copper color. Fruity caramel flavor, passage of yeast, with a balance of hop offsetting malt at the finish, which seems to include molasses. More malt than hop, but there’s a deal of hop. In the end there seems to be coffee in the mouth rather than chocolate. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Jun 17, 2006 2004 bottle aging in my cellar, 12 ounce and served in my Rogue Santa glass: Pours a rich mahogany hue topped by a small but lasting beige head and okay lace, oily legs which is good sign. The nose detects lots of carmelized and toffee laden malts, oxidized English hops, over ripened crab-apple and starfruit, rich aromatic pipe tobacco, star anise and juniper berry, and a olde yeast ester, yummy and inviting!
The taste was heavy on the sweet malt at first but a clear cut of bitterness still shined through. Undertones of fruit and minor spice added to the palate depth. The oxidation characteristic is full proof of it’s tribute to the basic English Olden Ales, I found this to very true to to the style. The mouth feel is smooth and very drinkable, almost no note of alcohol detected.
What a wonderful beer indeed, spot on! I hope the other bottle ages as nicely, need to get some more. Shocking surprise and is that not what we want from this "hobby"? JohnnyJ (1283), Carlsbad, California, USA Jun 14, 2006 Updated: Feb 16, 200705 bottle. Quite a good brew. Appearance is dark red/brown. Chocolate, coffee, carmel, and fruit flavors with a nice balance of hops. Medium mouthfeel. tennisjoel (931), Shakopee, Minnesota, USA Apr 21, 2006 Bottle. Dark red body. Caramel, Raisin, Coffee, and tobacco aromas. Nice and complex. Flavor is caramel and all spice. A pretty good offering! jake65 (1658), Williston, North Dakota, USA Apr 14, 2006 Complex flavor is present with the malts, caramels, chocolates, coffee, and hoppiness. Balanced flavor for the most part, except for the hops. I thought this brew was excessively bitter for a strong ale. WhiteSoxFan (152), USA Apr 7, 2006 ’05. Bottle. Bottle conditioned. Pours a deep, dark amber / mahogany. Clear with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly to a layer of foam. Malty, carmelly, plummy, raisiny, slightly spicy aroma. Good, malty, but well balanced flavor. There is plenty of bitterness without very much hop flavor. What does it for me with this beer is the mouthfeel. Medium to thick, it surrounds your tongue with thick, smooth, creamy feel, with just the right amt. of carbonation, and then it goes down smooth and light. This is definitely one of my favorite winter beers. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Apr 2, 2006 Updated: Apr 12, 2007120z bottle. 2005. Ruby, brown hue. Hazy with a slight ring of tan head. Fruity nose with hints of cocoa and anise. Full and rich with a great silky texture. Long dry hop finish. Caramel and dark fruit. Middle is smooth and sweet. Bitter and long dry hop finish. Piney and resinous.
