3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 adnielsen (3112) - Denver, Colorado, USA - OCT 8, 2011
Bottle @ home. Reddish brown appearance with a big, carbonated, light brown head. Piney, organic, earthy hoppy, caramel, toffee, moderately rich malty aroma. Fairly rich, moderately syrupy, dark caramel, toffee malty, moderately piney, bitter hoppy flavor. For the most part, this is smooth and fairly tasty.

12 oz. bottle at the STLHops Pinball Party. Vision starting to get cloudy. Glad we got the bigger name stuff out of the way early. Now I’m just picking things off the table. Pours a nice amber color with a lasting beige head. Aroma of banana, sweet malts, earth, nuts, ripnened fruits, and winter spices. Flavor of sweet malts, brown sugar, banana bread, and more peppermint-cinnamon winter spice. Medium-bodied, with a malty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Good ESA, a style I haven’t had a whole lot of.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 AWMiller (476) - Mansfield, Texas, USA - SEP 21, 2011
Not just a brew just for winter! This brew poured up a dark brown body with a sporty bubbly head with good retention and lacing effects on the glass. Aromas of caramel, hops, malts, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits (plums, prunes). Flavors of the same with a smooth clean finish full of chocolate and espresso. There are also hints of fig and something akin to candied apples intermingled with all those flavors. Medium-bodied and one that will definitely warm you up!
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Haast (37) - Texas, USA - SEP 9, 2011
12oz bottle, originally from Specs. I suppose it has been aged about 9 months, starting in the closet, then the fridge. Pour is hazy dark amber with a tan-orange head that sticks around and laces. Malty, hoppy, christmas-y aroma on first whiff. Once sipped, the flavor is malt, spice & pine, with a warming alcohol finish. Nicely balanced. Taste swaps between bitter and sweet. Yummy. Just like I remember from Christmas time last year. Guess it held up well.
While it has nothing to do with the beer, the label art is glorious on the 2010 release.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 bsp77 (724) - Minnesota, USA - SEP 4, 2011
Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.
Appearance: Rich reddish-brown with moderate tan head and some nice lacing.
Aroma: Caramel, cherry, toast and spicy English hops.
Taste: Caramel and wintry spice are dominant (even though no spices were added, must be the hops), with some cherry and fruity undertones. The strong spicy English hops build on the finish, and it becomes quite bitter. Great complexity from both malts and hops.
Palate: Moderate carbonation, somewhat creamy medium to full body, very dry finish.
Overall: Very good example of an English Strong Ale that has been ramped up on hops. The spicy, floral English hop bitterness is just slightly off-putting but this is still a very good, complex beer for the winter.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Vertical Bacon Strips (1617) - Asshat, Alberta, CANADA - JUN 8, 2011
Part of the 9hr epic solo drunkfest in Portland in Nov, 2010. CASK. Pint. Getting really wobbly and it’s only 4pm. Bad lighting in here - deep red? plenty tan head, small spots here and there. Huge malty nose, fruity, interesting spice - cinnamon and peppermint, candied orange rind, light alcohol. I like it because it is mellow and complex with no dominating characteristic to distract. Plenty of malty flavour, burnt caramel, weak coffee, herbal, cinnamon and maybe the faintest of clove, raisin. Medium bodied, almost no x-mas spice finish which is wonderful to enjoy this style of beer minus that distraction.
