Nice aroma and different hops flavor. Pretty calm for a winter ale.

Good bear, thought more flavors would come through on tap, but not this time, will have to go to the bars and hope its a freshly tapped keg. Tastes good, nice and bitter. could be a tad darker for the bite.

It’s a nice looking beer with a deep burgundy color and a foamy head that dissipates quickly. Not much of a nose to it, but that may just be me. It has a satisfying creamy, full-bodied texture. While it has a nice warming feel to it, it is not the most flavorful beer I’ve had. Hints of raisin and malt, but for the most part there’s not much to it. Good, but not great.

Good years and bad years and nearly ugly years for this brew, but this year is the best I can recall.
A viscous army tan head which hides quickly over a rich copper not unlike madrona bark at sunset. Leading flavor edge is hops and ping pong malt interaction not unlike a barley wine with richness dancing in the foreground. Complex in the way it interacts with food. Some swigs offer more caramel, some sing a chorus of different spices taking lead. A steal with post-offs at $11.98 and $12.98 for half racks. Stock up now. Please, Deschutes, duplicate this in 2009.

2008 bottle compliments of my good buddy Andrew - thanks! Pours a deep brown/red with a tan head. Aroma is subdued, but the hops and spices are apparent. The taste is bitter, but not unpleasant for a winter brew. The malts are complimented by notes of cinnamon and the citrus hop flavor. Easy to drink and left me wanting more.

2002: Primarily chocolate and caramel malt aromas, along with slight higher alcohol aroma. Reddish-brown with a slight haze. Low carbonation, thin body. Good head with some lacing. Fruit, chocolate, and caramel flavors present up front, with little to no perceptible hop bitterness at this point. Has a slight sweetness, but finishes quite dry, where a lingering, mild hop bitterness overpowers the malt. Sticky hops leave behind a thin film of resiny bitterness on the tongue and lips. Alcohol well-masked. Seems aged already. For an English strong, I would have preferred more body, robust flavors, and alcohol. Seemed more like an underhopped American amber with some chocolate malt.

Deschutes Jubelale was recommended to me by a friend and after tasting I am a little unimpressed. Any toasted malts or nutty flavors seem to be overshadowed by the bitter finish which detracts from the otherwise good flavor. The color is deep red and is quite impressive and the beer leaves a moderate amount of lace.
All in all, I consider this an average beer with great flavor potential... if only the bitterness on my tongue would permit that flavor to come through.

First one I"ve had in 7 years. Not as well balanced as I remebered it, but still a great beer.
