Copper red and clear. Well blended aromas of coffee and nutty malts. Big flavor to start. I was reminded of pecans and almonds. Softens up in the not too long finish. Easy drinker. A well thought out winter style beer.

2.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 madvike (1477) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 2, 2010
Bottle - Clear mahogany pour with a foamy off-white head. Spicy nose, with some sharp heat and bitter grassy hops over a soft, fruity, caramelly base. Hints of raisins. Taste is...yaii. I would say this needs some time to mellow, but at 6.8%? Flavors are all over the place and feel disjointed. Caramel, honey, grassy hops, orange rind, nutty malt. It’s all flying all over the place and oscillates between soft and sharp. Feels a bit watery in the mouth, though nicely carbonated. Man, I had high hopes for the Deschutes regular lineup and seasonals, but so far I have been very unimpressed.
2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 levih4pres (6) - USA - OCT 24, 2011 does not count
It’s a nice looking beer with a deep burgundy color and a foamy head that dissipates quickly. Not much of a nose to it, but that may just be me. It has a satisfying creamy, full-bodied texture. While it has a nice warming feel to it, it is not the most flavorful beer I’ve had. Hints of raisin and malt, but for the most part there’s not much to it. Good, but not great.
2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 Fratto (2021) - Arlington, Texas, USA - NOV 19, 2009
Six pack from the Whole Foods on Lamar. Dark red pour with a nice off white head. I smell a little alcohol? Didn’t expect that. Sour grapes, a little malt, brown sugar. Tastes like malts and stale fruit. Lingering hop aftertaste.

Had this one on tap at Clod’s in Corvallis. I thought it was very thin and not very warming for a winter ale.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2011 Bottle, thanks to Sham. Boozy aroma with hints of grapefruits hops and some caramel maltiness. Sweeter malts in nose as beer breathes. Mostly transparent mahogany color with some floaties and a nice tan head. Finishes quite thin and watery with a heavy dose of roasted malts in the middle. Starts sweet with some caramel malts. Very malty beer, slightly thin in the end which leaves a less than spectacular finish. (7/4/6/2/13) ********RE-RATE**********It’s been 5 years since I’ve last rated this, so I figured it was due for a re-rate. The aroma on this is a little metallic with some underlying diacetyl buttery notes present. Almost a weird mineral astringent presence is also in there. Not so aromatic. Transparent garnet amber body with a creamy, off-tan head that has decent retention and lacing left behind. Starts a little sweet, before this becomes a little vinous. Becomes caramelly and buttered with diacetyl in the middle. Finishes husky, dry, and burnt. Lingering metallic penny-like flavor. Not a fan of this at all. Difficult to consume.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Hildigöltur (5107) - København, DENMARK - OCT 20, 2004
Reddish coloured. Quite fruity and malty. Very sweet flavour. Not a bad beer, just plain boring.
2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20 jrallen34 (3445) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 30, 2011
A dark mahoany that is almost clear, very dark in the middle. A huge light tan head rises about four fingers. There is great retention, half the head falls fass, but a full two finger frosting like cap stick around. GREAT lacing. Certainly looks the part...The aroma is ROUGH with a capital R. Way too sweet with toffee then plums and winter spice. It teases because at first its almost nice, but its inappropriately strong. Weirdly reminds me of Lime Gatorade, how?...The taste is equally poor. Its incredily light in taste after how strong the aroma is. The feel is way to light, almost water. The taste is light toffee, coffee, gatorade, with chalk and alcohol.
This is horrible and needs to be dumped, even more opening it
