Totally superb. Barrel characteristics stand out a little more to me in the aroma than in the taste. Slightly thin mouth feel for such a big beer, but otherwise amazing. Deschutes knocked this one out of the park.

Bottle (22 oz) shared by mathieuc at tasting, thanks! 2014 vintage. Hazy reddish with a small off-white head leaving little lacing. Aroma is super sweet and boozy with caramel/brown sugar and loads of fruitiness. Taste is also sweet, boozy and fruity with caramel and mild spiciness. Full body. Moderate carbonation. Sweet lingering finish with alcohol warmth. Average BA Barley Wine at best. Sweet, boozy and cloying. Not super complex. Really nothing to get excited about.

Bottle 660ml. Pours hazy dark copper with low beige head. Good lacing. Aroma is of malt, sugar, vegetal stuff, alcohol. Taste is of malt, sugar, bitterness, alcohol, some oxydation. Palate: Full bodied. Soft carbonation. Overall: Good, sweet. Complex.

Pours a hazy red with a small offwhite head that leaves limited lacing. Nose is of caramel and alcohol. Taste is sweet (but not to the point of being cloying) with more caramel, brown sugar and alcohol. Pretty simple. Body is medium and carbonation moderately low. Light bitter alcohol finish. Overall it was OK but not much more, not worth of a repeat.

Serving: from bottle. Aroma: moderate caramel malt and citrus. Appearance: very small, off-white, initial head with no lacing and fully diminishing longevity. Cloudy, dark-amber body. Taste: heavily sweet, caramel initial flavor and finish with long duration. Palate: full body, syrupy texture and lively carbonation. Overall: very good

Something special for my first anniversary as a member of ratebeer - My brothers gift delivered directly from San Francisco: Pours clear, almost brilliant, light brown amber, with unstable tiny off-white yellowish foamy head. Visually low carbonation. Aroma: rich and intense malt aroma, which takes on caramel, toffee, molasses, supported with fruity notes, which takes on stone and some forest fruits and gentle wood (oak) aroma with note of vanilla. Flavor: Moderate high malt sweetness on the palate, which takes on caramel, toffee, supported with hop flavors, which takes on stone fruits. Hop bitterness is medium to high and perfectly balanced with malt backbone. Fruity esters are present and takes on stone fruits. There are also wood flavors, which takes on vanilla, Alcohol warmth is noticeable, but very gentle, smooth. Finish is sticky and slightly dry. Body is full with luscious texture, very mouthfeel, because of tannins. Carbonation is low. Seriously I did not expected so smooth drinkable barley wine, Very, very good beer.

22 ounce bottle, 2014 vintage, best after date of 2/24/15 printed on the label. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a murky reddish/brown color with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. Aroma is sweet and fruity, the brew smells like dark fruit, caramel, toffee, vanilla and some red wine. For the most part I think the taste is the same as the aroma, but it’s not quite as sweet as I was expecting. Seems to lean more towards the fruity/wine flavor, although the caramel, toffee and vanilla are noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit syrupy and slick with moderate carbonation. The alcohol is well hidden, and it’s easy to drink. I thought this was good, but was hoping it would be better. Maybe I let it age for too long, but it’s still an enjoyable brew.

Backlog from the Brony Bottle Share at Travlr’s. Moderate brown with small offwhite head. Caramel malt, toffee, candy apple, dark fruit. Hint of cardboard detracts from a good barley wine.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a thin off white head. Aroma of malt, booze and toffee. Taste is really sweet and boozy, really malty. Not for me but good for what it is.
