2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
651mL 2009 ed black wax poured into snifter. The color is a clear, later hazy, reddish orange with a small, but dense yellow head. Not too much retention but leaves a small protective layer. Very little lace. Aroma at first cries infection- maybe Brett or something similar but not quite as nice. Spicy wood, phenols, spicy sourness lead me to believe there is something wrong here. As it warms up, the infection notes are replaced by spicy alcohol, toffee, caramel, chocolate covered strawberries. Fresh air, dew, melons blend with spicy alcohol and heavy phenols. Big Nestle Quik cocoa powder and malted milk balls (Whoppers) show through as well. Itís interesting but Iím not sure if I like the odd combo. Taste up front is pretty much confirming my infection hypothesis: very light bodied, dry, spritzy with hot alcohol still very present. Something like Brett but not quite has attenuated this down to near zero and leaves no body. Palate is very chalky and powdery. Hard to drink this without getting a headache from all the phenols and not so nice infection character.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Originally sampled on 7/19/2014. 2014 Reserve-Pours a hazy reddish brown color. The thick head leaves a decent lacing. The aroma is of wood, caramel and toffee, brown sugar soaked hops, and hints of wine. Flavor has lots off toffee maltiness and hops mixed with some dark/tart fruits in the taste. Wood and vanilla on the finish. Moderately warming, and full bodied. Excellent beer overall, although a kinda hoppy for an english barleywine, but for me thats o.k.

2014 bottle. Ruby brown pour. Aroma is tangy caramel, mild oak. Taste is burnt caramel, mild vinous quality, mild bitterness. Ouch thin and watery. Didnít totally come together for me much like The Abyss.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Sampler at the Portland brewpub. Pours deep amber with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel and toffee malts, some bitterness, light candy sweetness, and some dough. Flavor the same with a nice blend. Average to smoother texture. A solid barley wine.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2014; 22oz in balloon. Muddy appearance with little fine foam. Dried apricots and banana chips in the prodigious nose. Plummy sweetness succumbs to waves of taut bitterness, achieving a satisfying harmony. Scant dustiness in the finish contributes to the impression of dryness despite the fruit flavors.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Aroma of malts, sweetness, oak and molasses. Dark caramel color that appears thick. Minimal head. Great fluid and smooth palate with a slight bite at the end. Malty sweet flavors with an oaky sweetness and a slight fruit tartness. Some hop bitterness is present. Very well blended.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Nice to have rated this as the 667 rating....get it off the devil, big toffe malts in aroma some maple wood character with some northwest style hops. Flavor equally as malty with slight maple syrup and maple wood notes. Finishes without any sweetness just malty and slight earthy hop finish.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
2014 Reserve - wax sealed 650mL bottle
Pours a murky bronze body, holding a thick beige ring of foam.
Nose is intense, lots of aged character - cooked citrus, dried fruits, nutmeg spiciness, Madeira, subtle nutty almost Rancio-like character.
Thick bodied, smooth, low carbonation, long warming finish.
Rich, quite complex - sultana & dried fig, treacle & Madeira, lots of earthy spice & stewed fruits. Long finish, reasonably high bitterness.
Serious beer indeed, does seem a touch oxidised.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Shared bomber, poured to tulip snifter. Murky, light brown/copper with a thick creamy head that faded quickly. Complex taste: oak, caramel, toffee, dark fruit, port, and more. . . and they work nicely together on the palate. Smooth with no hint of an 11 ABV. A great beer!
