Slightly hazy garnet pour with a 1 finger, creamy tan head that has great retention. Aroma is dark fruit, licorice, toffee, earthy leaves, bready and tree fruit esters. Flavor is dark fruit, plum sauce, ripe tree fruit esters, dark toast, earthy leaves, light untoasted woody notes, a little clove and cinnamon spice, vanilla, toffee, dark caramel and a little sweet rum-like booziness, citrus, floral and light pine hops. Heavy body, creamy, to slightly oily feel, and light carbonation. Really great overall.

UPDATED: APR 16, 2014 25 oz bottle poured into a teku glass. So perhaps I jumped the gun a bit. The ’best after’ date isn’t until Feb 2015, but I suppose I couldn’t wait. The aroma is mostly a sharp, very sweet, candy sugar and acetone combination. On the sweet side, cherry, candy apple, and tropical fruits come through. Complimenting that is a secondary tone of wood and nuts. After a bit of settling, the acetone starts to come off as a port-like alcohol note with some additional tones of chocolate and raisin. The pour is a deep, rich, clear, red-brown / ruby color. The head is a light brown color with mostly micro - small bubbles and a creamy look. It ends up reducing to a messy medium-thin film with a healthy thickish ring around the edge. The lace is runny, but some light splotches are left behind. The taste is a medium high, rich, malty sweet with a medium-high, bitter and a strong alcohol presence.(yeah, probably mellows nicely with age). It’s a highly carbonated, but soft, fluffy mouthfeel that’s full and malty rich in body, and chewy, viscous, and sticky in texture. The finish is a mellow bourbon warmth with a burnt caramel touch. The burnt quality carries over to the aftertaste in the form of burnt toast and chocolate raisin predominantly with some nutty and woody tones. The aftertaste lingers for a short time, but then abruptly fades.

Draft at thr Olde Towne Tavern in Littleton. Pours a foggy ruby color with a thin head. Brown sugar and cherries in the aroma with a smoky maly finish. Sweet taste with brown sugar, berries, and a smoky malt finish. Excellent barley wine on a snowy day.

Bomber. Pours a deep coppery-brown, decent off-white head with very nice retention. Nose is loaded with dried fruit (dates, raisins and figs), brown sugar, caramel, hints of vanilla, dark berries. Mouth is medium bodied (actually relatively light for a Barleywine), slightly oily, sweet and reminiscent of a port up front, the dried fruit and caraeml in the nose are on the kisser as well. Not too boozy given the ABV and some oaky tannins from those wine barrels comes through on the finish. Just paid my taxes and I needed a drink after I saw the bottom line... which reminds me: Fuck you, Uncle Sam you money grubbing (and squandering) buffoon. Time to send your senile flag-hat-wearing ass off to the nursery home... and your nephew, the State of Illinois is thieving whore as well. Okay, so now I got that off my chest, this is a really nice brew. I may have to pick up another bottle (after panhandling it would seem) so I can lay it down and see how well it ages.

Totally superb. Barrel characteristics stand out a little more to me in the aroma than in the taste. Slightly thin mouth feel for such a big beer, but otherwise amazing. Deschutes knocked this one out of the park.

A- Pours a ruddy brown hue with a thin fizzy brownish head that dissapates quickly. S- Very similar to mirror pond but bigger. Caramel, mixed fruits, hints of raisin. T- Dark fruit, plum, hints of bitter hops toward the end. M- Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. D- Very easy to drink and balanced but not quite as interesting as I was expecting.
