Pours a deep amber with a thin off white head. Piney hop aroma with some carmelized sugar and dark fruit as it warms. Full bodied and warming. Definitely on the malty side. Fair amount of malt sweetness, but the hops provide some balance. Hop bitterness comes out as it warms. Very drinkable for the ABV. SudsMcDuff (1867), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 3, 2010 Bottle: Pours a reddish brown with a thin off-white head that goes to the perimeter of my snifter for some nice lacing. Hoppy Aroma and malty flavor has an alcohol presence with hints of syrup, oak and some warming spices. Creamy texture and a thin body. A nice winter warmer on this 46 degree day here in Florida. presario (3010), Calgary, Alberta, Canada
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 31, 2009 The intrigue of the wax dipped bottle is gone for me. It once was cool but now more of a pain. 2009 Edition. The beer once poured looks very nice. Reddish amber with a thin lasting froth. Smells like a big beer; big ABV and IBUs. Thick aroma of hops and syrupy malt. Tastes like the aroma advertised with a lot of spice and a sourness from the barrel at the edge. A nice warm sipper. Lots of hops. Pour a dark reddish brown into a glass with not much head. Tastes like an ale with slightly sour aftertaste. The liquid lingers in mouth after a swallow. This is ok stuff. A few have been better. Many have been much worse. matt7215 (1002), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Dec 25, 2009 This is a big beer. Unlike Doggie Claws or other American barleywines this is less hop forward. Big alcohol bite at start and at finish. Malty in the middle. fata2683 (942), Panama City, Florida, USA
