This is base camp, where any craft brew exploration begins. A distinct hop nose and hop-forward flavor make Mirror Pond the quintessential Pale Ale. It is aromatically complex, multi-layered, and unmistakably “right.”

Draft - Not sure if what I had was an accurate representation of the beer. Draft lines may have been dirty. Tired malt flavor with a muted hop aroma and bitterness. I could tell there was something good here.

bottle into a shaker pint best by 09/11/2015 A: Darkish dull orange body with an inch of dark beige tight foam. Good retention and thick lace. S: Rich medium colored bread nose. Kind of sweet but crisp smell. Not hoppy to me today. T: English hop flavor hits first with a crisp crackery bitter backbone. A slight sweetness is OK. M: Creamy, wheaty and heavy feel with foam still thick on the lips. O: Good well made ale but seems more like an amber than a pale to me. Certainly English style. Pretty good overall though.

Bottle 12 oz. At C230, Ottawa, Illinois. Pours deep golden with low off-white head. Good lacing. Aroma is of malt, citrus. Not much to say. Taste is of citrus, bitterness. Palate: Medium-full bodied, medium carbonation. Slightly sticky. Overall: OK. Not really fresh unfortunately (past best by date). Will re-rate.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a golden amber color with a big billowy white head. The head fades rather fast, leaving a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the brew is strongest of a bready aroma mixed with a little bit of a caramel sweetness. Along with these smells comes some lighter notes of a light harvest fruit and a little bit of a grassy and earthy smell. Taste – The taste begins with a rather bready and very lightly caramel sweetened flavor mixed with a moderate showing of an earthy hop (for a pale at least). As the taste moves forward the caramel fades, giving even more show to the bready malt, while at the same time some flavors of grain and more earth come to the tongue. With a little bit of a grassy taste coming at the very end, one is left with a somewhat drier and rather decently earthy pale ale taste to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is average in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. For the mix of the drier bready flavors and the moderately earthy hop tastes, the feel is rather nice as it’s moderateness accentuates these flavors all while not making it too heavy on the palate. Overall- A decent pale ale overall. A little bit more earthy in nature with a decent showing of a bready taste. Not too sweet for a pale, but rather robust in flavor and somewhat slower sipping for a brew of only 5 %.

Sampled from a bottle, this ale poured reddish orange into the glass, the pour made a white and off-white cover of one to two fingers which receded a bit, it left nice spots and small fingers of lacing on the glass, this drink had aromas of toasted malt with some citrus and grass hops, a little bread, some fruit notes with malt and candy like sweetness, the flavors were light toasted malt with a citrus hop bitterness, very light fruit and there was very little sweetness, the finish had a light to less than medium bitterness that dried the palate, a little malt flavor followed afterwards, the mouth feel was light and easy, it was creamy and had lively carbonation, an easy drinking beer, a nice pale ale, a good beer for quenching your thirst after working in the yard.

Draught. Clear gold amber pour, long lasting head. Aroma is lightly fruity. Flavour is mostly malt, light in sweetness, mild bitter finish. Great Pale.

Red orange colour with a light white head. Aroma is sweet. Taste is strong with bitter hops then mellowing to a sweetness and finishing with hints of caramel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This pale ale has a good coarse foam which stays very long. Good hoppy aroma with citrus touch penetrate the foam. The taste is first marked by light caramel malt, and then lists the hops slowly in and mingling with citrus, but also slightly sweet exotic fruit such as passion fruit and peach can be tasted. Here, I think that I got a really well-balanced pale ale, which with its aggressive hoppy bitterness still in the final stay on track and not step over the very close border between pale ale and IPA.

Pours a medium gold color with a small but lasting off-white head. Solid aroma of fruit and bread with along with some piney hops. The bread and fruit flavor leads with a bit of soft fruitiness coming through before a mildly bitter finish. Solid but not spectacular.

1 inch slightly tan head. Amber color, slightly hazy, obvious carbonation in the first bottle, light to little carbonation in the second. Odd. Head recedes slowly leaving an uneven surface and sticky lacing. Somewhat weak aroma, with slight fruit or citrus. Malty initial taste, sweet middle, with only a very mild hop bitterness in the middle. The bitterness (such as there is) asserts itself more in the aftertaste, but this beer is not bitter at all, really. The malt backbone is substantial, but well balanced between malt and hops (considering both aroma and bittering), but malt dominates the taste itself (i.e. little bitterness). Mouth feel is moderate, typical for the style. Overall, a well done traditional American Pale Ale, but clearly not in the recent trend of hopped up "APAs" that are more like IPAs.
