potbeercollege (264), Boulder, Colorado, USA Nov 6, 2009 Draught on Nitro. Black with very thick tan head, strong lacing. Mild aroma of caramel and malt, light hop character, not overpowering but very nice. Taste is very clean and smooth, notes of roasted coffee and chocolate. Thin texture, bitter finish. 22415brewery (59), redmond, Washington, USA Nov 4, 2009 A fairly complex malt profile for such a jet black stout, there’s a ton of roast and a intermingling of faint notes of licorice, bittersweet chocolate, coffee, burnt sugar and the unmistakable Galena hop. The somewhat full mouthfeel compliments the dark brown froth that laces the glass. Carbonation levels are spot on for a beer with this kind of fullness and roasty character. A tad filling with a slightly acrid sharpness. A classic example of an American Stout. TheGrandMaster (1848), Auckland, New Zealand Oct 22, 2009 Bottle (in NZ), pours pitch black with a think foamy brown head. Dark chocolate and coffee on the nose. Whoa boy - a big dry roasty palate. There’s a good hopping with pine and a little spice, with that malt adding plenty of roasted coffee and then dark chocolate lingering on the tongue. Stout as it should be. hopheaven (83), Eureka, California, USA Oct 20, 2009 Pours a motor-oil black with creamy tan head that rings the glass. Aroma of medium-to-dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, grassy/piney hops, and a rounded depth of roasted grains. Flavor is hop forward with a dark, milk chocolate body and a coffee bean finish. Some lightly toasted, mellow caramel character is also present. There is also a hint of cola. This beer is perfectly hopped and the aroma is gentle enough to let the substantial malt profile characterize the beer. Maltajo (103), TARRYTOWN, New York, USA Oct 13, 2009 12 oz. Bottle Thanks to Dchmela!
Great pour with a nice brown head that lasted pretty well. Chocolats, roasted malt, some molasses and coffee with a finish that stays with you. A very nice beer! neepsntatties (285), Portland, Oregon, USA Oct 7, 2009 On nitro at Bailey’s Taproom in Portland, OR. Colour... jet black with a thin tan head that totally coats the sides (and stays!) when swirled. Nose... very roasty with medium bodied black coffee. Palate... creamy, yet sharp, roasty, tangy, anise, coffee, molasses and a long bitter finish. I like this from the bottle, but nitro is truly fantastic! beerbill (1922), Laurel, New York, USA Sep 30, 2009 12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with ditmier. Pours just about black with a moderate-large light brown head that lasted through mid-glass and left a nice webbing of lace. Very pleasant aroma of chocolate, and roasted malt. While the aroma is more dominated by chocolate, the flavor is mostly roasted malt, burnt toast and just a bit of bittersweet chocolate. Moderate roasty bitterness at the finish. Very good stout. NomDeBeer (399), Maryland, USA Sep 28, 2009 Pours black with a sizable tan head - excellent retention. Taste is heavy on roasted malts, sweet grainy coffee, chocolate, and a bit of molasses. Good body and mouth feel. Very drinkable and ejoyable.
