Commercial Description:
Smooth and black, like the volcanic rock, Obsidian Stout is a solid, satisfying beer with a rich roasted-malt flavor. Obsidian Stout gets is inspiration from one of the world's largest obsidian flows at Newberry Volcano--just a few miles south of the brewery. "The Big Obsidian Flow," as they call it, covers more than 700 acres with shiny black obsidian.

Near black, thin lingering tan head, light lacing. Aroma is sugary sweet, some milk chocolate and caramel, good roast. Flavour is of dark fruits, burnt cake, some bakers chocolate, roasty. Bitter mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes long, bitter, roasty.

Aged fine. A nice milk stout.

355ml bottle obtained in a trade with JohnnyJ, thanks Jonathan.

Mmm mmm one of Deschutes best standards and even better on tap. Pours brown black with a tan head and plenty of lace. Aromas of coffee, bitter chocolate, and caramel. Taste is much the same but unfortunately it is a bit thin. All around a good beer to have on hand.

Bottle pours black with a creamy, khaki colored head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is heavy in dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, grapefruit and licorice. Flavor contains the same, with additional notes of anise, and pine. Overall body is moderate to full, with soft carbonation and a dry finish. Definately a nice transitional stout for people who get bored with their Guiness.

Dark leather pour bordering black with a creamy latte head. Aroma is of rich cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, and coffee. Flavor is similar with tons of roasted malt. Not overly thick or viscous...just a good solid stout.

Draught on Nitro. Black with very thick tan head, strong lacing. Mild aroma of caramel and malt, light hop character, not overpowering but very nice. Taste is very clean and smooth, notes of roasted coffee and chocolate. Thin texture, bitter finish.

A fairly complex malt profile for such a jet black stout, there’s a ton of roast and a intermingling of faint notes of licorice, bittersweet chocolate, coffee, burnt sugar and the unmistakable Galena hop. The somewhat full mouthfeel compliments the dark brown froth that laces the glass. Carbonation levels are spot on for a beer with this kind of fullness and roasty character. A tad filling with a slightly acrid sharpness. A classic example of an American Stout.

Bottle (in NZ), pours pitch black with a think foamy brown head. Dark chocolate and coffee on the nose. Whoa boy - a big dry roasty palate. There’s a good hopping with pine and a little spice, with that malt adding plenty of roasted coffee and then dark chocolate lingering on the tongue. Stout as it should be.

Pours a motor-oil black with creamy tan head that rings the glass. Aroma of medium-to-dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, grassy/piney hops, and a rounded depth of roasted grains. Flavor is hop forward with a dark, milk chocolate body and a coffee bean finish. Some lightly toasted, mellow caramel character is also present. There is also a hint of cola. This beer is perfectly hopped and the aroma is gentle enough to let the substantial malt profile characterize the beer.
