HoppyGuy (111), USA Jul 27, 2008 Bottle. Pours a, well, obsidian color, just like the name implies. One inch tan head. Aroma is malty with earthy grains. Wonderful roasted malt flavor with coffee and vanilla in there, too. Good, soft mouthfeel. I’ve tried other brews from Deschutes, but I think this is my favorite so far. I’d like to pair this beer with a low-and-slow smoked pork butt, roasted skin-on potatoes and a mixed green salad. marcus (1821), Sacramento, California, USA Jul 18, 2008 This dark brown ale poured with a decent tan head and a pleasant malty aroma. There is a very rich flavor of chocolate and coffee. There are no notable flaws in this brew, making it a great value for the style. tuohyam (14), Enumclaw, Washington, USA Jul 13, 2008 A great stout and incredible for the money. I always go back to this beer again and again. It is yet another example of the flawless brewing of Deschutes. chokmah33 (115), Bremerton, Washington, USA Jul 2, 2008 Updated: Oct 13, 2008Aromas of cereal grains, vegetable, molasses, licorice, charcoal and vanilla with floral hops backing. Kinda reminds me of rootbeer.
Flavors of dark chocolate, smoky coffee, charred malts, and nuts. Some dark winey/fruity notes; cherry and plum.
Creamy palate, lots of bubbly. Dry finish.
Good with gruyere. Tripplebrew (486), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Jun 29, 2008 Pours a dark dirt/tar, chocolate brpown with tan head that dissipates to a tan lacing. Aroma is nutty, chocolaty and malty. Strong coffee flavor with roasted malts. Body is mild and medium. fidel (884), Livermore, California, USA Jun 28, 2008 Updated: Sep 18, 2008Dark brown/black, roasted malts, dark
chocolate, a little coffee, slight dark fruit
slight crisp hop finish.
Vas19 (293), Maryland, USA Jun 25, 2008 Pours black with a thick brown head. Roasty aroma with a bit of coffee. Flavor is more of the same. There is also a sweetness that provides a nice balance. No blow-me-away flavors, but a good stout none the less. gotohelunc (473), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Jun 24, 2008 Bottle. Pitch black, small tan head than just sits there forever. Straight ahead coffee nose and flavor. Very roasty, warming, and so incredibly smooth. Surprisingly strong flavors. I love it.
