Nearly perfect appearance but Ive come to love to see sediment in my stouts in porters which this lacks. This is a beautiful beer all around. Deschutes comes through yet again. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 29, 2008 2008 Bottle - Pours opaque black with a small tan head, aroma is molassas and malt with a slight astringency...flavour is dominated by smoke and toast, nuanced with oak, coffee and hop flowers...not too sweet given the ABV, rather a great malt presence that isn’t cloying...I have had just about every other Deschutes beer and had never tried this until recently, not sure why, because this is an incredible stout for the money... Aroma is malty with earthy grains. Wonderful roasted malt flavor with coffee and vanilla in there, too. Good, soft mouthfeel. I’ve tried other brews from Deschutes, but I think this is my favorite so far. I’d like to pair this beer with a low-and-slow smoked pork butt, roasted skin-on potatoes and a mixed green salad. marcus (1850), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 18, 2008 This dark brown ale poured with a decent tan head and a pleasant malty aroma. There is a very rich flavor of chocolate and coffee. There are no notable flaws in this brew, making it a great value for the style. tuohyam (14), Enumclaw, Washington, USA

It is yet another example of the flawless brewing of Deschutes. chokmah33 (118), San Luis Obispo, California, USA

Flavors of dark chocolate, smoky coffee, charred malts, and nuts. Some dark winey/fruity notes; cherry and plum.
Creamy palate, lots of bubbly. Dry finish.
Good with gruyere.
