Commercial Description:
Smooth and black, like the volcanic rock, Obsidian Stout is a solid, satisfying beer with a rich roasted-malt flavor. Obsidian Stout gets is inspiration from one of the world's largest obsidian flows at Newberry Volcano--just a few miles south of the brewery. "The Big Obsidian Flow," as they call it, covers more than 700 acres with shiny black obsidian.

Black, opaque beer with a brown head; aroma is dark chocolate; flavor is sweet (molasses?) with a nice bitterness on the back of the tongue; smooth mouthfeel; finish is roasty dry with a nice bit of hop;

Bottle. A solid stout. Pours a black body with a tan off white head. Aroma is roasty chocolate malt, caramel, and lots of malt. Roasty coffee in the flavor with little etoh or hops. Good beer.

Bottle, Beers of the Worldlack with a beige head. Aromas are earth roast malts with chocolate, caramel and some saltiness. Spicy. Flavours are bitter roast coffee with spritzy yeast and liquorice. Bitter on the finish. Good stuff.

Pours a dark opaque brown color witha small tan head. Nose of heavily roasted malt, chocolate, touch of dark fruits. Initial displays that robust richness of the roasted malt flavoring enhancing to like black coffee. Chocolate seeps in. Mid palate of hints of mollasses. Finishing with a hoppier finish than expected and continuing deeply roasted malts. Good palate duration. Found the flavor to be too dominated by the roasted malt which lack complexity making it one dimensional. However, the beer was still enjoyable. Good head retention. Medium body.

Pours a pitch black with a thin layer of beige foam and great lacing. Aroma is pungent - alcohol, oatmeal cookie. Perfect stout taste - chocolate mousse, nice present hops, which is refreshing after so many sweet stouts. Just a tad tangy/acidic and roasty in the finish, nice warming alcohol. Body is not too thick, but still very creamy and substantial. I really like this stout, I wish I could buy it locally. Many thanks to my friend Stefan for the generous gift of 2 bottles!

Pours a nice thick black with a thick tan head. Big roasted grain chocolate malt aroma. Smooth chocolate, roasted grain taste. Very nice medium body. Finishes with a dry slightly bitter aftertaste. Very nice stout.

Bottle courtesy of SuzyGreenberg. Pours jet black with a dense, creamy tan head that leaves a blanket of lace on the glass as it recedes. The nose is a sweet and roasty malt and dark chocolate with supporting notes of lactose, faint coffee and Cavendish tobacco. Medium-bodied and silky-soft with a lightly bitter, roasted finish. The flavor is of sweet, roasted malt, bitter-sweet cocoa, light coffee and just a touch of sweet & sour lactose, finishing lightly bitter and roasty. This is an exceptional brew and one that I will drink regularly if it’s ever distributed here in KC. Thanks a ton for sending me this excellent extra, Ben!
