Commercial Description:
Smooth and black, like the volcanic rock, Obsidian Stout is a solid, satisfying beer with a rich roasted-malt flavor. Obsidian Stout gets is inspiration from one of the world's largest obsidian flows at Newberry Volcano--just a few miles south of the brewery. "The Big Obsidian Flow," as they call it, covers more than 700 acres with shiny black obsidian.

Pours black with a moderate brown head that has moderate retention and good lacing. Aroma is on the dry side and herbal with notes of pipe tobacco and coffee. Pleasingly complex flavor starts dry then quickly becomes sweeter, presenting chocolate and dark roasted coffee, finishing with a solid complement of bittering hops. Lovely rich mouthfeel, just enough carbo that doesn’t get in the way. A very fine Stout.

12oz bottle thanks to a trade I made some time ago. Very dark brown-black pour with a brownish medium head. Very roasty aroma with big malty grain. The flavor is nice. Roasty malt grain with a touch of mineral, hints of dry coco but mostly roasted grain. Medium mouth fell. Creamy and (again) roasty. This was a very enjoyable stout.

Near black pour, thick brown head. Very roasty aroma, chocolate too. Intense burnt malt, chocolate, coffee, quite sweet, a touch nutty. Velvety mouthfeel. Long dry bitter finish. Really terrific!

Yummy. I was pleasantly surprised by this unassuming beer. Tastes almost like an Imperial, but with a little less complexity and alcohol. Roasted nuts, very malty, and unassaulting to the palate. This could make a great session beer, in my opinion. I’ll definitely have to remember this one. Thanks Deschutes.

bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a small but beautiful tan brown head. Smells of chocolate malts, coffee, and charcoal. Palate is creamy, with medium carbonation. Flavor is rich of burnt notes, espresso, semisweet chocolate, maybe even some roasted chestnuts. Definitely dominated by a smoky, toasted flavor. Finishes dry and bitter. Really a nice blend of dark flavors, though I felt like I tasted some hops in there to help round the brew. A great beer, though not for those looking for a summer thirst quencher.

Bottle, pours a black color with a fast fading brown head. Aromas of toast, hops, and coffee beans. Flavor is roasted coffee, citrus and a nice blast of hops on the finish. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but a good beer anywa.

Sampled at the Savor DC event. Pours a medium bodied, opaque black with a cloudy white head. Aroma has roasted malts, nuts and coffee. Flavor is both sweet and creamy with plenty of coffee, toasted grain, chocolate, and a hint of citrus. Finish is dry with coffee bitterness.

Really a tremendous beer with a rich, deep character that spans the palate. Starts midnight black with tons of visible malt. Smells of chocolate and chicory and roast. There is a surge of malt on the tongue, and a nice hop balance to the beer. Somewhat viscous, medium weight. Long, drying, bittering chocolate and coffee finish. Still, there is more character in the beer than I can describe, with a terroir, mineral depth that few American stouts achieve.
