Commercial Description:
Smooth and black, like the volcanic rock, Obsidian Stout is a solid, satisfying beer with a rich roasted-malt flavor. Obsidian Stout gets is inspiration from one of the world's largest obsidian flows at Newberry Volcano--just a few miles south of the brewery. "The Big Obsidian Flow," as they call it, covers more than 700 acres with shiny black obsidian.

Pours a deep black with a creamy thick brown head which slowly gives away to some nice lacing. Roasty grain and coffee aroma, with hints of malt and chocolate. Nice flavor as well, mainly roasted malt and coffee. Thin dry finish. A good stout for the price.

Nitro tap at Papago. Black with creamy lasting brown head. Roasted chocolate, coffee, and chocolate chip cookie aroma. Smooth, rich and creamy roasted chocolate with mild fruit and medium bitter finish. Medium-full body with nitro creamy low carbo. Very nice.

This one is always easy to overlook sometimes. Yeah, it’s not a sexy imperial stout, and the label is kinda lame. But the contents in the bottle are fantastic. I’ve consumed this beer several times over the years, so a 6-pack and $8.00 later, it’s time to rate.

The beer pours out a deep black color with a really nice two-finger thick tan head. The head sort of shimmers in the glass as it dissipates. An arom of smoke, charred malts, molasses and toffee. Creamy mouthfeel. Smooth dark roasted malts, coffee, and dark chocolate truffles. Pretty dry in terms of a stout. Not a whole lot of residual sweetness left. Nice stout anyway you look at it."

Dark brown in color with medium-sized bubbles that dissipated quickly. The nose was sweet with scents of coffee, chocolate and oats. The palate comes off soft and has a dry bitterness to it. Fairly simple in the mouth.

This was just a tad too dry for a dry stout. Extremely roasty, like coffee burned to the bottom of the pot, a light bit of chocolate and cocoa, burnt maltballs. Not my favorite stout.

12oz bottle pours deep darkness with mocha head and spotty lacing. The aroma is roasty, chocolate covered malt balls and some licorice. The taste kicks off with a mouth full of highly roasted malts, burnt malts and coffee beans. Chocolate notes surface midway and ride with the roasted malts into the finish. Very nice stout.

Bottle. Huge tan head, dense and lasting with some lace, black body, roasty nose with espresso notes and perhaps some dark chocolate and maybe some floral hop notes. Pretty dry, typical roasted malt flavors, sort of like drinking powdered baker’s chocolate with some ground espresso mixed in. Could use more crystal malt. Finish sort of disappears.

Black pour, medium beige head. Aroma is roasty and coffee smells nice. Flavor is roasty, chocolate, a touch of coffee. Dry aftertaste with a touch of citrus hops. Medium bodied, smooth finish and just a great example of what a stout should be.
