Deschutes Obsidian Stout

Pours a deep dark black with a three finger frothy tan head. Held beautifully for 20 min. Aroma of coffee, toffee and toasted nuts. Flavor is roasted coffee with a nice dry bitter aftertaste. Chocolaty and burnt toast. I really like this stout. Flavor lasts and lasts in the mouth.

Pours very dark brown with four fingers of big mocha head that recedes to about 1/8" and stays. Aroma of molasses, dark chocolate and coffee. Big meaty mouthfeel. Smooth and a little oily. Lots of broken lacing. Flavor is big rich coffee and dark chocolate. Plenty of roastiness. A bit of roasty molasses emerges as it warms. Medium amount of bitterness overlays and gives a little hit through finish. A straightforward heavy-duty excellent-tasting stout with a great palate as well.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of kenb. Pours black with a medium creamy tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, sweet caramel and chocolate, and slight coffee. The flavor is much of the same: roasted/caramel malts, chocolate, a bitterness not in the aroma, sweet as well. Medium bodied. Solid brew.

Bottle. Pours a nice dark brown with a tan creamy head and good lacing. The aroma is that of chocolate, roast grain, malt, and coffee. The taste is very nice, dry, mocha, roasted malt flavor. Not Guinness but an excellent stout none the less.

12oz bonus bottle from buckeyeboy on 08/30/07. Its a fitting time to drink with the recent release of Deschutes most famous beer, the Abyss. The main trade with Buckeyeboy for a 2006 Abyss. Now 5 months later, the 2007 Abyss is somewhat readily available in San Diego, where I live. I’ve been reluctant to drink this Obsidian stout, because I don’t think I like dry roasty stouts. Sure, enough this one is the same. Nice malty aroma with some roasty grains. Black color with a medium head of medium bubbles quickly fading leaving a microbubble dense ring around the edge of the glass. The flavor is dry and very ashy and burnt. ingredients must have called for cigarette butts. Yuck.

Pours a deep brown, with a light tan colored, creamy head. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts. Creamy smooth flavor of roasted malts and coffee. Slightly dry, with no lingering aftertaste. Great beer.

Very dark black pour with an initial rich mocha head that leaves decent lacing. Aroma is rich roasted malts with a nutty coffee touch. Touch of milkyness. Flavor is milky chocolate with a strong roasted coffee bean flavor near the finish. Nice mouthfeel and good body.

Black body, nice cascading head of a couple fingers. Modest tan lacing with nice retention. Extremely roasty, more coffee than chocolate. Sweet chocolate in the front of the palate with a huge dose of roasted coffee in the back. Finish is dry with a roasty bitterness. Carbonation is great, body is rich enough to support the big flavors. Easy to have several in a sitting.
