tytoanderso (1382), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA Oct 19, 2007 Bottle via trade with Jake65. Aroma of charred sweet caramel and toffee. Dark chocolate. Some fading hints of vanilla and alcohol. Pours dark, dark brown. Almost black with a thin khaki head. Flavor was quite dry with lots of roasted and charred malt. Come coffee and dry chocolate notes as well. Medium boded. Would have liked it to be richer and creamier on the palate. Thanks Jake! DTM (541), Winters, California, USA Oct 18, 2007 Updated: Apr 18, 2008Pours a dark black with a thin tan head. Nutty with a hint of chocolate. Very smooth with only a little bit of a bitter finish. Overall a good beer. gauguin007 (11), Seattle, Washington, USA Oct 18, 2007 Pours color of old motor oil with attractive parchment tan head. This stout looks good and leaves a nice lace on the glass. Scent of bread, chocolate, toffee and pine tar, maybe some figs. Smooth mouthfeel w/ sharp bitterness. Flavor of ethiopian coffee and caramel chocolates. Big hop presence at the end but overall not overbearing and leaves you wanting more. norsedoc (162), USA Oct 16, 2007 Tasted alongside Lion Stout. Aroma of airy cocoa. Brown head frothy. Tastes of roast coffee, but not overpowering. More crisp and lively than Lion. Finishes slightly bitter EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Oct 11, 2007 Bottle via jake65 - thanks, Jake! Robust aroma has a coffee bean, roast, and chocolate profile similar to that of much bigger imperials. Pitch pour with a rocky, bubbly, lacing light brown head. Superbly balanced chocolate and roast taste, nothing really standing out or dominating, just smooth and tasty all the way through. Somewhat dry with light hop funkiness (and just a super faint hint of grapefruit. Picking up some mocha notes in the chocolaty aftertaste. Thin body but very sessionable. Only lightly bitter, and just as salty. Not the obvious powerhouse - but luscious and pleasant. There’s a lot of joy to be had here. AdamGott (190), Idaho Falls, Idaho, USA Oct 7, 2007 pour is nearly coal-black with light brown head - bitter aroma with hints of chocolate, coffee, burnt wood - chocolatey/coffee/toffee taste with a slightly burnt taste (which is why I would rate it down slightly more than most seem to in this forum) ChrisJ (100), Warrenton, Virginia, USA Oct 4, 2007 Very dark (opaque) brown. Large thick foamy/creamy head. Aroma is slightly bitter with notes of dark chocolate. Flavor hits you quickly big sweet with slight alcohal taste. The usual suspects are here. Charcoal, coffee, dark chocolate, yet they are weak and most definitley in the background. The sweet fruity flavors that come through in the nose is slightly overpowering. A quality stout. miketd (679), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Oct 2, 2007 Pour is pitch black with a brown, wispy head. Aroma is nice...chocolate and coffee with some roasted malts. Flavor is mostly the same...chocolate and coffee. Highly carbonated and fizzy. Smooth, but just a tad thin. Not bad for what it is. Solid stout.
