Icommonsewer (122), TUCSON, Arizona, USA Aug 29, 2007 this stout has a harsh bitter character that overwhelms the taste buds... there is a late bite on the palate that is displeasing as well robforbes (1083), Bremerton, Washington, USA Aug 25, 2007 black with medium size khaki head.
smell of roasted malt, cocoa, whiff of coffee.
nicely bitter, smooth, taste of dark cocoa, the cocoa taste hides the alcohol extremely well, you can just taste a little bit on the back-end.
very, very, nice stout, deschutes did well with this one. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Aug 24, 2007 Poured from a bottle. Poured a deep brown, nearly black color with a nice tan head. Initial smell is milk chocolate and roasted malts. Taste matches the aroma with a nice milk chocolate start that leads into roasted malt flavor. Little bitterness. It is thick, and nice lacing is left throughout the glass. Very nice stout. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Aug 24, 2007 Draft at Taphouse Grill in downtown Seattle. Pours midnight brown with a tan head and good lacing. Aroma of subtle dark roast, milk, and chocolate. Full bodied with a slight creaminess to the texture. Initial flavor of milk chocolate, hazlenut, and dark roasted grains that transitions to coffee and tamed bitterness mid palate. Moderate amount of residual sweetness. Finish is semi-dry and smooth. Very well done. Almost, I say almost, as good as Bells Kzoo Stout. jhumphries69 (718), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Aug 22, 2007 Pours a opaque black with thin, dark tan head that fades quickly into a thin layer of cloudy tan with a few patches of large bubbles. The head laces the glass heavily. The aroma is big and dark: dark fruit, sugar, coffee, malts, and alcohol. The flavor is quite nice - it starts bitter-sweet with loads of coffee, chocolate, and fruity hops. The middle of the tongue picks up more roasted grain flavors (burnt toast, coffee) combined with hop flavors and sweet malts with a hint of caramel. The beer finishes with a touch fruit, lots of dark, roasted, bittersweet malts, and a light dose of hops. The mouthfeel is pleasantly creamy with just a subtle impression of acidity from the carbonation, and it finishes full in body. Overall, an awesome stout. tatinek (20), South Dakota, USA Aug 19, 2007 The best stout I have had to date. Very smooth body nice tan head that stays. Wonderfully rich and malty flavor with a faint coffee essence. My first Deschtes beer. For this beer alone I wish Deschutes was marketed in my state. ucusty (1871), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Aug 11, 2007 Thanks to hellbilly for the bottle! pours dark with thick creamy head, that slowly disapates to a killer film. lots of lacing.roasted malts, choolate, figs, and coffee. finish’s with a wonderful dry chocolate, vanilla, and hops. very complex with all types of nice this going wonderful balance as well. I wish i could get this on the reg. very rich beer!
