scrizzz (1252), kirkland, Washington, USA Aug 10, 2007 Updated: Jun 11, 2008Amazing full rich malty roasted grain aroma and flavor. Jet black base, dense sandy head. Bold, fierce taste that warms like a hug from yr grandmother. Not too thick, not too thin with a bit of some alcohol bite. brianjames1 (322), Northridge, California, USA Aug 3, 2007 Pours dark, small tan head. Very smooth and very flavorful, excellent beer from Deschutes Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 26, 2007 Nice rich coffee-chocolate aroma, toasted-burnt grain, and a smoky sweetness. Light milky sweetness. Dark brown-black clear with foamy-frothy tan head. Medium heavy body with medium carbonation. Great toasted-burnt malt sweetness with chocolate and light coffee bitterness. Tangy carbonic finish with nice dryness. Molasses and mild alcoholic after. nearbeer (1833), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 10, 2007 Draft. Black, black with a medium and lasting head. Nice aroma of roasted malts, grassy hops. Blend of coffee and molasses, slight bittering hops. Palate is smooth and medium-heavy bodied. scottmc (167), Lakewood, Colorado, USA Jul 6, 2007 This beer is as dark as the night. A very dark stout that gives the taste of heavy malts and produces a dark tinted head and it lasts. The finish is extremely dry, but worth it. a good beer. Delirium (495), Santa Cruz, California, USA Jul 2, 2007 Bottle. Pours black with a large, persistent tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, with a bit of coffee and hint of chocolate. Flavor is bitter roasted malt with some earthiness; very dry. The aftertaste is actually a bit more interesting than the initial flavor, with bitter chocolate, vanilla, and of course more roast. A well-made dry stout. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jul 1, 2007 Bottle: Pours black with a light tan head, nice lacing. Aroma, roasty, faint chocolate and coffee, with earthy quality. Flavor, roasted malts, some dry bitterness, and some coffee. Definitely on the dry side, not much sweetness at all. Palate is fizzy to start but smooths out as it goes down. thewolf (5635), Kolding, Denmark Jul 1, 2007 Bottle. [thanks to after4ever]. Pours a grand-looking black (only slightly brown edges on my (well-chosen) Guinness pint glass). Head is fizzy as I pour, but it settles as a thick, lacing brown whipped cream on top of the blackness. Aroma is mild and sweet - but certainly not weak. There is a clear definition of cocoa, a touch of vanilla and distant coffee. I sense a touch of yeastyness coming through as well. I was initially surprised by the mouthfeels fizzyness, entering my mouth and dancing a little around on my tongue. But it soon settles and a distinct creamyness comes through. Flavour is quite dry, almost like taking a piece of dark chocolate and letting it melt in your mouth. The vanilla comes through the cocoa, roasted and mild coffee tones to balance it out nicely. Only bad(ish) thing is that the initial flavour on drinking it is quite limited, only for the aftertaste to really come through.
