Commercial Description:
Smooth and black, like the volcanic rock, Obsidian Stout is a solid, satisfying beer with a rich roasted-malt flavor. Obsidian Stout gets is inspiration from one of the world's largest obsidian flows at Newberry Volcano--just a few miles south of the brewery. "The Big Obsidian Flow," as they call it, covers more than 700 acres with shiny black obsidian.

Pours an attractive dark brown with a nice tan head (lasts longer in a narrow glass). Aroma of some sort of raspberry-ish tang, dirt, caramel, chocolate (not too dark), and milk/creamer. Dry roasty taste, with some milk chocolate and a tangy hop taste. Finishes very earthy, dirtlike with some black coffee there. Great mouthfeel (creamy, low-carbonation, not thin, but drinkable) and a good stout overall. Tangy-qualities are out of place though.

Very dark in color, I had this one on nitro so it drank smoothly. Average head retention. On the palate it was thick and rich. I could taste roasted coffee and definitely chocolate notes. There is a prevalence of hops in the finish; a little bit of a bite, but taste didn’t linger in my mouth.

aroma of nougat (like the center of a 3 musketeers, w/ caramel & cocoa. opaque darkest brown w/ thick mocha foam. thick & smooth in the mouth, tongue feeling the dark & slightly sour. flavors of roasted & smoked malts, marshmallow, citrus underneath. complex finish, including darkest chocolate. I can see its base in Guinness, but the NW revolution, with more hops, body & alcohol.

12oz bottle Best by 04/13/07. Pours black with a 1/2 finger tan head that dissipates to a ring and a thin film after a minute. Aroma of roasted malts and coffee, grain, oats, light anise, tobacco, and maybe a bit of soy. Flavor is somewhat bitter and roasty up front, with some salted nuts, grain, some molasses sweetness, and a little earth. Big roasty bitter finish---mmmm good! Medium smooth body with some moderate carbonation. Very good stout--I wouldn’t mind having this more often at all.

Courtesy Quake1028. Pours a pitch black with a light tan head. Smells really nice, some coffee, lovely chocolate, dark malts, and a little roastiness as well. Fairly light bodied, big chocolate and coffee, especially in the finish. Very roasty as well, with a good bit of nuttiness. Not a bad stout at all.

Bottled. Dark, ruby red with a dense, tan head. Chocolate, mocha, smoke, some roast and even more chocolate in both aroma and flavor. Full body. A really nice one. (070413)

12 oz bottle. Best by 12/06. Dark brown with a thick cratered tan head. Rings of lace. Raisin, dusty oats and light molasses. Bitter black licorice and cocoa with pithy tang. Juicy lime leads to a dry, bittersweet chocolate finish. Medium body but drinks lighter.
