Treephiend (57), Walla Walla, Washington, USA Mar 28, 2007 Pours black with tan head. Aroma is toasty and light. The flavor is what you expect from a stout. Chocolate coffee and roasted malts. Nothing stand out but very solid. Plus the flavor isn’t as strong as many stouts and I actually like that. It lets you appreciate the subtilties a bit more I think. AllAboutStout (605), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Mar 28, 2007 Served in my delirium tremens tulip.
Pours a very dark brown with a nice quarter inch head. Nice lacing and froth remains.
Smell is roasted malts and cocoa bean. Taste is of bittering coffee bean. The mouthfeel is carbonated and medium in feel. A decent stout from an above average brewery. A good session beer that I would like to have on hand at all times.
DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Mar 25, 2007 12 oz. bottle on 3/19/07 in Colorado. Pours black with a large deep tan head. Aroma is dark roasted and burnt coffee. Thick and full mouthfeel that’s smooth and satsfying. Dark caramel and molasses sweetness is balanced by a nice peppery bitterness. This a really nice everyday, easy drinking stout. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Mar 23, 2007 12 oz bottle. Very dark. Nice foamy head. Lots of nutty roasty burnt aromas. Very similar flavor. Super nutty... roasted nuts. Some coffee came through on the flavor as well. Some alohol flavor on the finish. Very yummy. kkearn (994), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 20, 2007 bottle; best by 5.26.07. obtained via trade with kenb. Opaque, with a moderate sized brown head. Fairly subdued aroma, with notes of chocolate and licorice. Roasted malt up front builts in intensity towards the finish. Hops most evident towards the end. Long lasting bitter finish. Thanks, Ken! mcbackus (725), Merritt Island, Florida, USA Mar 20, 2007 bottle from yonkers65: pours black with a large fluffy tan head. aroma of sweet chocolate and malts i dont know if a scent can be smooth, but this is a smooth aroma with some nuttiness. flavour is smooth chocolate balanced well with the malt sweetness. a very well balanced stout that has a nice lingering bitterness to it, that finishes with some bitter coffee notes. decaturstevo (1971), decatur, Tennessee, USA Mar 16, 2007 A dark brown pour with a tan head and more good lacing. An aroma of buttery chocolate cake. A rolling flavor of carbonated espresso. The flavor seems to transition from espresso to that chocolate then to a hard bitter that really makes this beer special. No bad tones on the bitter it just spreads across the palate. I hate to sound like a broken record but the palate is solid except for a touch overly carbonated a really good beer. TomDecapolis (3130), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 15, 2007 Thanks to awaisanen for the trade. Pours a deep black with just hints of some amber coming through. Large foamy/rocky deeper tan head that left nice spotty lacing. Aroma of up front grainy maltiness, doughy, roasted malts, caramel, nuts and a very light hop presence. Flavor of roasted/toasty malts, some dark chocolate, coffee with cream and sugar, nutty and just an overall very solid stout. One of the best I have had.
