Commercial Description:
Smooth and black, like the volcanic rock, Obsidian Stout is a solid, satisfying beer with a rich roasted-malt flavor. Obsidian Stout gets is inspiration from one of the world's largest obsidian flows at Newberry Volcano--just a few miles south of the brewery. "The Big Obsidian Flow," as they call it, covers more than 700 acres with shiny black obsidian.

My bottle seems to have passed the "Fresh by" date, can’t wait to try a fresh one. Very roasted, sweet chocolate. Mellow, calm and fulfilling. Not overly dimensional, bold and delivering. Creamy, slightly acidic in the finish. Somewhat earthy. Hint of alcohol.

Bottle. A tasty stout, but perhaps lacking the complexity of stout if a similiar ilk. Nice deep brown to black appearance. Aroma has the usual suspects of mocha, roast and chocolate. Palate is sweet, with light caramel notes, then a roasty malt character and then, as is the tradition in the NW US, lots of citric, piney hops in the finish. Lots of flavour, but the body was quite light.

Nice black pour with a slight smoke aroma and some malt as well. Tasted very smooth with nice chocolate and smoke flavors. Had a real subtle coffee feel to it also. Good stuff

I first had this beer on tap in Olympia WA and it was an experience that opened my eyes to good beers. Beautiful obsidian in the glass with a thick creamy head. Full bodied, smooth and hearty with subtle smoke and chocolate notes. A wonderful everyday stout.

Another jet black pour for the evening with a smoky chocolate aroma. Similar chocolate body.

Pitch black with a light brown, huge and creamy head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and chocolate. The mouthfeel is quite full. The flavour is surprisingly mild, but it has a nice body with notes of chocolate, cocoa, licorice and coffee. The balance and bitterness is nice, and it is a nice stout for beginners too. Thank you Tom/After4ever for this nice beer, that I had on my wishlist! 1911

Black, creamy tan head. Nose held soft notes of dark roast coffee and black chocolate, and lighter wafts of citrus. Flavor was a bit more intense then the nose with notes of lightly smoked coffee, roasty chocolate, a touch of vanilla, and some faint ashy earthy bitterness. Light to medium bodied, medium carbonation, dry bittersweet finish. Well made stout. Thanks for sharing Schutzenliesel....

12oz bottle from Jake65 - thanks! Nice inky black stout with a sweet roasty aroma. Very drinkable, not excessive mouthfeel. The dominant presence is chocolate smoothness, but as it warms there’s a touch of bitter roastage. Very fine stout.
