Commercial Description:
Smooth and black, like the volcanic rock, Obsidian Stout is a solid, satisfying beer with a rich roasted-malt flavor. Obsidian Stout gets is inspiration from one of the world's largest obsidian flows at Newberry Volcano--just a few miles south of the brewery. "The Big Obsidian Flow," as they call it, covers more than 700 acres with shiny black obsidian.

Black body. Aroma is roasted coffee with notes of chocolate, caramel and grapefruity hops. Probably would have been much hoppier and bitter if it wasn’t for the nitro thing... based on my nitro IPA experience. Sorta reminded me of Guinness... which to me is bad. Still, a solid stout. Would be nice to see an imperialized version of it if there isn’t one already.

This stout pours to a black body with a dark reddish-brown, fizzy head. Poor lacing and a fully diminishing head contribute to a lack of visual appeal. Aroma is of sweet cookie malts. Initial taste is lightly sweet with a moderately bitter finish. Watery and thin on the palate, it has a burnt taste with light carbonation. Dry on the mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours like your typical stout except for a thinner light brown head. Aroma is like cold chocolate milk and a little smoke. Not big, but pleasant. Taste is bigger than I would’ve expected from the aroma. Taste is bitter coffee, chocolate and toffee. Somewhat acidic and plastic aftertaste that lingers, don’t care for that, got better as it warmed, but a solid brew otherwise.

Bottle. Pours deep, mysterious... the perfect complement to midnight. Aroma is smoky/chocolaty malt. Pleasant, fluffy mouthfeel of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt. Nice brew.

Bottle courtesy of Dubbercody, thanks again Jaime! Pitch black pour with a nice somewhat fizzy tan head. Nice aroma of coffee, roasted chocolate malt, some hints of smoke...very full and inviting. The flavor is roasty malts with somebitter chocolate and coffee and a bit of toffee. Nice carbonation and a somewhat creamy mouthfell with a roasty almost warming finish. Nice stuff, I wish we had it around here.

(Bottle) Pours dark to black. Dry cocoa and coffee in aroma with a light smokeyness. Roasted malt and hints of rubber. Salty, well balanced flavour with dry cocoa and light smokey, anise aftertaste. Medium bitterness and body.
