luckygirl (1221), Boulder, Colorado, USA Jun 11, 2006 Best by April 29. Bought the 12 oz bottle before then, and it’s been hanging out in the cellar under good conditions. This beer is far more pleasing than it was the first time I tasted it, when it was rife with a nasty plastic/chemical smell that ruined the whole encounter. Glad to see it’s feeling better. :) Beer is an opaque motor-oil brown with a large, frothy, light-brown, mostly lasting head. Attractive arbors of lace on the snifter. Aroma is roasty-creamy with heavy notes of roasted grain, dark chocolate, light note of molasses; Hoppy with a moderate note of resin/pine, moderate spiky herb; Yeasty with a moderate note of dough, trace note of cheese. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly-to-moderately bitter, lightly acidic with a long, moderately bittersweet, light acidic, trace warm finish. The body is full, the texture is creamy and velvety, the carbonation is lively. TheLeadDog (101), Kent, Washington, USA Jun 11, 2006 A great stout! Carmel, Chocolate, Coffee, and Toffee flavors all in that 12oz bottle. Thick long lasting head with good laceing. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again. Does Deschutes brew anything bad? I haven’t found one yet! eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 5, 2006 One of the more impressive stouts I’ve had. This one poured dark dark brown-black, no red edges. The mouthfeel was the most impressive part, very smooth and slightly creamy. The aroma was of roasted chocolate with some fruits detectable. The flavor was excellent. A perfect balance of bitterness to go with a semi-sweet roasted chocolate malty base with some sort of dark fruit(s) underneath it all. Man, the hops selection (no idea what it was) was perfect for the style, as was the level of hopping. A two thumbs up on this one! Wish I could come back to this one easily (ie. not through mail orders). BrewDad (2363), Olympia, Washington, USA Jun 5, 2006 [Bottle] A great dark black stout with a hardy flavor. The aroma was a deep dark rich coffe and chocolate smell. The flavor was also as good this was one top stout. There was such a deep awesome flavor this is a great beer. A must try for stout lovers. biggcb (459), Harleysville, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 2, 2006 12oz bottle. Pours as dark as dark can be, with a thick beige head. Aroma is primed with lots & lots of roasted malt goodness and a trace of chocolate. Flavor is also packed full of the roasted malt, with a little bitter chocolate and some toffee. Very smooth on the tip of the tongue followed by a little bitterness on the back. Very smooth. Very drinkable. sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jun 2, 2006 12oz bottle. Thick, dark and opaque. Two fingers of tan beige head. Spotted. Looks good! Initial aroma is anise. Toffee and roasted malts. slight coffee note. Defined coffee and cola notes. Vanilla and raisins. Thick and full bodied. Toasty and malted milk ballls. Thick roasted and delicious. Chilled ,but starting to open up. Cola and bitter. Good and good! Toffee and bitter chocolate. Don’t get me wrong, this is a fantastic stout. Tar and pitch. Damn! I did what I had to do t get this to a 4.0 rating. And it was worth it. So good. so smooth! This is a patened...F’N A. Yeah! BuckeyeBoy (1645), Boise, Idaho, USA May 12, 2006 12oz Bottle Pours out a nice dark blabk. Topped of with a Great tan head. There is a good tast of roastiness. Over very good. kimcgolf (825), Dacula, Georgia, USA May 9, 2006 This was really a GOOD stout. Poured jet black with thin tan head and okay lacing. Aroma was that of chocolate mixed with dark fruit..grapes, plums, cherries. Taste was very much chocolate malt. As beer warmed, alcohol became more noticeable about mid-glass, but perfectly blended with the flavor. Very good, long, smooth finish. This has to be my favorite stout to date....just sorry I can’t readily obtain in GA
