SpudClampDawg (1027), Jasper, Indiana, USA Aug 11, 2005 Airy aroma that is slightly roasty and slightly yeasty as well. Very dry body, loaded with bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt. Bitter finish, almost puckering with some warming as well. Too dry and bitter for me.. Good, but definitely not great. I have a feeling this beer gets extra points because it’s a Deschutes product... grant (792), Long Beach, CA/Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Aug 7, 2005 I must have really deleted more ratings than I thought--I keep running across beers that I know I’ve rated. I like this one. Deep, deep tarry brown, verging on black with caramel-colored head. Strong roasted barley aroma with some milk chocolate and light coffee. Slightly acidic, but delightfully creamy body. Slightly fatty and sweet somewhat befitting an oatmeal stout, which I presume this is not--not a bad thing though. Incisive, nondestracting bitterness alloyed with mid- to light-roasty notes. Finishes with a glowing, melding, well-balanced feel. A consistently good stout and better than the more famous porter from this brewery. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA Jul 31, 2005 Bottle. Pours out black in color with a nice, large light brown head. Great lacing is left behind. Nicely done in aroma with roasted grain and sweeter chocolate aromas. Medium bodied which would be my only fault on this beer, it just didn’t seem to have the heft I was wanting. Roasted grain, chocolate and a bit of coffee in flavor. Nicely balanced with hop bitterness. Nicely done. hotstuff (3175), Indiana, USA Jul 24, 2005 Bottle. Medium sized tan head that was mostly lasting, fair lacing, opaque, no visible carbonation and a black hue. Malt and chocolate aroma. Malty, roasty, coffee and some chocolate in the flavor. Smooth palate. Medium body. Nicely done. thoreaubred (42), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 23, 2005 Updated: Jul 25, 2005Though Deschutes beers are a little too sweet for me, this one is pretty nice and smooth, with a nice roasted flavor. Not my favorite stout but good. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jul 17, 2005 Bottle at the Crow’s Nest outside Denali Nat’l Park. Pours beautifully with a big cascade that settles into a big rocky top. There’s a big nose of currant and sugar which carries to the flaovrs ... wood and bitterly fruity. 3daddict (139), Portland, Maine, USA Jul 10, 2005 Very dark, nearly black color with a medium sized tan head. Sweet roasted malt aroma with tinges of coffee and chocolate. Definitely a mouthful to drink with strong malt flavors, good bitterness, rich flavors and a satisfyingly long finish. World class stout by anyone’s standards richlikebeer (823), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 6, 2005 a strong chocolate scent with a trace of bitter grassy hops waft off of the solid black body with its thick foamy head. a progression of flavors starting with heavily roasted coffee, giving way to some sweet chocolates, and ending with a bitter grassy hop bite. in terms of texture, the smooth and creamy mouthfeel was excellent. unfortunately, the aftertaste was rather sour and the bitter hops were the taste that lingered behind, rather than the coffee or chocolate, as i would have preferred.
