Hooker (450), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada Dec 13, 2004 Dark chocolate brown colour. small dark frothy head. robust roasted malt nose. thin chocolate and coffee taste joshpiledean (224), Ames, Iowa, USA Dec 10, 2004 Opaque black pour, small tan/light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts and dry chocolate, very rich, slight alcohol. Burnt malt flavor, with some light coffee tones, some chocalte comes through. Long bitter chocolate finish. Rich feel, rich body. Will buy again. biermonk (259), San Francisco, California, USA Nov 26, 2004 Another beer from Gromit...Pours opaque no light seeping through even around the egdes..BIg roasted malt flavors here that are joined by a good dose of hops...Slights hints of chocolate arise toward the finish...Good solid Stout Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Nov 24, 2004 Deep chestnut brown body, medium/thin clumping tan head. Black malt aroma with roasted coffee and piney hops. Surprisingly hoppy body (of the pine cone variety) adds a spicy character to the black malts, coffee, and roast. The black malts impart just a hint of dark fruit. The hops are an unusual twist; I think the same hops are used in Victory Storm King. Thanks Bill (batkins) for the bottles! rogueminded (41), Newport, Oregon, USA Nov 21, 2004 roasted flavor. poors black, nice tan head. Perfect for camping or outdoor festivels. Smooth, but seems to jump from level to level. Interesting brew. Worth trying. igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA Nov 19, 2004 about 99.9% opaque...head is light brown HUGE and creamy. nose has great chalk, moderately roasty, moderately chocolatey notes. flavor is heavy on the roast, light on the chocolate, medium bodied, slight alcohol in the flavor. fairly hoppy finish with a decent bitter aftertaste. Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Nov 11, 2004 Almost black pour, not quite opaque, dense creamy tan head. Mostly sweet aroma (oatmeal stout like)with a decent roasty grip. Condensed molasses, coffee, soy sauce, vegetal oil and licorice notes. Very smooth palate, creamy, velvety texture is enhanced by the low carbonation. Slightly buttery tones. Well hopped in the finish with a bitterness that enlaces the coating roastiness. Above average thanks to an engaging mouthfeel, looks and almost feel like a nitro conditioned stout though the flavor is not influenced. PullMeABeer (203), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Nov 7, 2004 #100 Bottled. What a great name for a deep, pitch-black stout. Of course it poured dark obsidian, with a thin dense brown head sitting on top, and I could see some sediment on the sides of the glass. No highlights when head to the light, this beer is dark. Aroma is when you put a camp fire out with a bucket of water, roasty, earthy, and a little musty (in a good way). Also hinds of licorice and smoke in the aroma. Flavor is smooth and creamy, with loads of roasty malt, barbequed flavors, and dark semi sweet chocolate. Not overly bitter, and not overly sweet, nice compromise in the middle. Drinkability high. "That’s one good looking beer."
