COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

Bottle. Medium sized tan head that was mostly lasting, fair lacing, opaque, no visible carbonation and a black hue. Malt and chocolate aroma. Malty, roasty, coffee and some chocolate in the flavor. Smooth palate. Medium body. Nicely done.

UPDATED: JUL 25, 2005 Though Deschutes beers are a little too sweet for me, this one is pretty nice and smooth, with a nice roasted flavor. Not my favorite stout but good.

Bottle at the Crow’s Nest outside Denali Nat’l Park. Pours beautifully with a big cascade that settles into a big rocky top. There’s a big nose of currant and sugar which carries to the flaovrs ... wood and bitterly fruity.

Very dark, nearly black color with a medium sized tan head. Sweet roasted malt aroma with tinges of coffee and chocolate. Definitely a mouthful to drink with strong malt flavors, good bitterness, rich flavors and a satisfyingly long finish. World class stout by anyone’s standards

a strong chocolate scent with a trace of bitter grassy hops waft off of the solid black body with its thick foamy head. a progression of flavors starting with heavily roasted coffee, giving way to some sweet chocolates, and ending with a bitter grassy hop bite. in terms of texture, the smooth and creamy mouthfeel was excellent. unfortunately, the aftertaste was rather sour and the bitter hops were the taste that lingered behind, rather than the coffee or chocolate, as i would have preferred.

Bottle, rating from old notes. Dark opaque pour. Huge coffee aroma. Roasted malty flavor, more roasted coffee, and a noted small but there hop presence. Somewhat bitter end.

On nitro @ Archer Ale House. Great tan head that lasts and lasts and lasts. Aroma of roasted coffe and chocolate. Very full and rich flavor, with hints of caramel, massive chocolate and a slight bitter tinge of black coffee. There are hops here, but on nitro the hop flavor is very subdued. If you can get this brew on nitro, you must! It adds a whole new dimension to a well crafted stout.

Opaque jet with a wormy dark and light brown, creamy head that formed good lacing. Floral aroma from both hops and esters mingle to make a candy/gummi bear aroma that changes into a creamy and meaty dark malt aroma. The flavour is also creamy with plenty of roasted malt and quite a bit of coffee accent and pear notes. It tastes a little salty, but not unpleasantly so, and the roasted coffee flavour lingers. Medium to full body with a lasting bitterness from the dark malt. Medium carbonation. Excellent stout.
