Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

Pours a opaque black with thin, dark tan head that fades quickly into a thin layer of cloudy tan with a few patches of large bubbles. The head laces the glass heavily. The aroma is big and dark: dark fruit, sugar, coffee, malts, and alcohol. The flavor is quite nice - it starts bitter-sweet with loads of coffee, chocolate, and fruity hops. The middle of the tongue picks up more roasted grain flavors (burnt toast, coffee) combined with hop flavors and sweet malts with a hint of caramel. The beer finishes with a touch fruit, lots of dark, roasted, bittersweet malts, and a light dose of hops. The mouthfeel is pleasantly creamy with just a subtle impression of acidity from the carbonation, and it finishes full in body. Overall, an awesome stout.

The best stout I have had to date. Very smooth body nice tan head that stays. Wonderfully rich and malty flavor with a faint coffee essence. My first Deschtes beer. For this beer alone I wish Deschutes was marketed in my state.

UPDATED: JUN 11, 2008 Amazing full rich malty roasted grain aroma and flavor. Jet black base, dense sandy head. Bold, fierce taste that warms like a hug from yr grandmother. Not too thick, not too thin with a bit of some alcohol bite.

Nice rich coffee-chocolate aroma, toasted-burnt grain, and a smoky sweetness. Light milky sweetness. Dark brown-black clear with foamy-frothy tan head. Medium heavy body with medium carbonation. Great toasted-burnt malt sweetness with chocolate and light coffee bitterness. Tangy carbonic finish with nice dryness. Molasses and mild alcoholic after.

This beer is as dark as the night. A very dark stout that gives the taste of heavy malts and produces a dark tinted head and it lasts. The finish is extremely dry, but worth it. a good beer.

Bottle. Pours black with a large, persistent tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, with a bit of coffee and hint of chocolate. Flavor is bitter roasted malt with some earthiness; very dry. The aftertaste is actually a bit more interesting than the initial flavor, with bitter chocolate, vanilla, and of course more roast. A well-made dry stout.

Bottle: Pours black with a light tan head, nice lacing. Aroma, roasty, faint chocolate and coffee, with earthy quality. Flavor, roasted malts, some dry bitterness, and some coffee. Definitely on the dry side, not much sweetness at all. Palate is fizzy to start but smooths out as it goes down.
