| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 24, 2007 Poured from a bottle. Poured a deep brown, nearly black color with a nice tan head. Initial smell is milk chocolate and roasted malts. Taste matches the aroma with a nice milk chocolate start that leads into roasted malt flavor. Little bitterness. It is thick, and nice lacing is left throughout the glass. Very nice stout. drjay44 (829), Salida, Colorado, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 8, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours a thick mocha colored head of great duration with attractive lacing, over jan opaque brownish black body which appears to be clear.....nose is rich of roasted malts with coffee chocolate hints....tastes again of roasted malts with bitter hop finish...mouthfeel is medium. A solid middle of the road presentation of an American style stout. tarheels86 (823), Washington DC, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 19, 2008 Awesome! Pours a used motor oil black with a dark brown head (like Coca-Cola fizz). Very porter like- I swear the brewery has mismatched the Black Butte "Porter" with the Obsidian "Stout". Awesome lacework. Aroma is espresso, dark chocolate, raw cocoa. Taste is similar though I’m missing the roasted malt flavor. Aftertaste is dry and hoppy. This is well balanced and well-executed: my favorite of the Deschutes family. drismyhero (815), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 8, 2003 Years ago before I had really started drinking beer, and way before I developed a taste for it, I asked a 21 year old friend to go to the store and grab my friends and I some "good" beer. By "good" I meant easy to drink, in hindsight what we really wanted was something like Mike's or Hornsby, but what we got was this. At first sip I wanted my money back from the asshole who we thought intentionally purchased us the worst beer at the store. Years later, I can say that this is really not a bad beer. What freaked me out so much was the flavor: strong roasted malt and cloying richness - but that's what I dig now. Very well balanced and very solid, like the Black Butte is to porters. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 16, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours a black body with a dense, finger-width, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves lots of creamy, layered lacing. Aroma of rich, semi-sweet chocolates and roasty coffees. Some citrusy florals keep this well rounded. Flavor is full of roasty, rich, goodness. Sweet dark chocolates, heavy but not aggressive roasts, some chalky coffees, and a light bouquet of citrus bittering hops. Palate is medium bodied, dry, and leaves a lot of lingering roasty, rich chocolate goodness. Overall, my kind of stout. Straightforward, but big and bold. I enjoyed this one a lot. fakepurseninja (798), Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 7, 2006 Updated: Feb 22, 2008Re-sampling - Thin body but very rich, complex roasted malt body. Heavy on the bitter chocolate and roasted espresso bean. Finishes with a strong roasted coffee profile. A great everyday stout. Acknud (794), Morganfield, Kentucky, USA
