COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

The best stout I have had to date. Very smooth body nice tan head that stays. Wonderfully rich and malty flavor with a faint coffee essence. My first Deschtes beer. For this beer alone I wish Deschutes was marketed in my state.

From 341 ml bottle. Pours an opaque black with a large brown head that collapses to a thin cap. Good lacing on the glass. Aromas of rich stewed and dried fruits (raisins, prunes, stewed apple, fruit mince) with hints of cocoa, black coffee and smoke. Taste is roasted malt with more dark fruit up front. There’s then a light coffee bitterness that dissolves into tobacco, cocoa powder and cinnamon. Not as full bodied as the colour might suggest but still an excellent easy drinking stout.

This is a great stout that justifies its higher gravity by packing in more flavor. It’s a nice looking beer too, deep black in color with a ring of had that lasts the duration and big ropes of lace on the side of the glass. This has a nice coffee aroma especially when first poured with an underpinning of died plums. It has a nice creamy texture and mild carbonation that help bring out some chocolate note without the beer being cloying or heavy and finishes with a lingering cocoa bitterness. This is very definitely one of the better American stouts out there.

Tan head, black and brown color. Aroma is licorice, roasted coffee. Taste is all coffee, bitter espresso, heavily roasted malt. Some pine hop bitterness in the finish. Nice mouthfeel- creamy. Very dry- needs some sweetness for balance.

Not bad. A very subtle aftertaste, will eventually buy again, but not anytime soon. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cap leapt off with gusto and a fresh roasted coffee bean aroma filled the air. On a closer whiff there is more coffee; bitter and heavy roasted, a touch of charred wood, liquorice root, topsoil, heated tyre rubber - all in quite pleasant and sound. Appearance is impressive. A messy plumage of tannish foam holds steady atop a midnight brown body - opaque in the depths. Unexpectedly lean on the palate. Malty bitter with a touch of cola tanginess. Long, roasted malt, coffee bean and burnt wood finish. Not much melding on the palate, but it is dark malt dominated. Pleasant drinking but a little weaker than I’d anticipated. Quaffable, besides its ABV. (12fl.Oz, BB 06/08/14, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

From a bottle. Aroma is of coffee and chocolate. Color is definitely obsidian with a small brown head. A fairly strong coffee bitterness upfront with a sweet chocolate, malty finish. Medium carbonation and a full body.
