COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

The best stout I have had to date. Very smooth body nice tan head that stays. Wonderfully rich and malty flavor with a faint coffee essence. My first Deschtes beer. For this beer alone I wish Deschutes was marketed in my state.

Not bad. A very subtle aftertaste, will eventually buy again, but not anytime soon. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cap leapt off with gusto and a fresh roasted coffee bean aroma filled the air. On a closer whiff there is more coffee; bitter and heavy roasted, a touch of charred wood, liquorice root, topsoil, heated tyre rubber - all in quite pleasant and sound. Appearance is impressive. A messy plumage of tannish foam holds steady atop a midnight brown body - opaque in the depths. Unexpectedly lean on the palate. Malty bitter with a touch of cola tanginess. Long, roasted malt, coffee bean and burnt wood finish. Not much melding on the palate, but it is dark malt dominated. Pleasant drinking but a little weaker than I’d anticipated. Quaffable, besides its ABV. (12fl.Oz, BB 06/08/14, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

From a bottle. Aroma is of coffee and chocolate. Color is definitely obsidian with a small brown head. A fairly strong coffee bitterness upfront with a sweet chocolate, malty finish. Medium carbonation and a full body.

Pours black with a medium sized bubbly tan head. The aroma is big on espresso with a healthy balance of chocolate. Roasted malts and licorice are present as well. The taste has some sweetness in it to go along with some bitterness. Flavors of espresso and to a lesser extant chocolate remain strong. Long aftertaste of espresso. Medium bodied, with a thicker texture, with softer carbonation. This one doesn’t do anything to crazy. Its just very solid.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance had a dark brown/close to black colored body with a two finger off-white/tan foamy head that rises a bit and then drops gently leaving some thick spider web lacing gracing the sides of the glass. The smell has a smokey, woody, espresso, and roasty combined fantastically. The taste took all of those previously mentioned aromas entering a sort of sweetness from some light chocolate and some light vanilla, dry espresso aftertaste, dry sticky finish. On the palate, she sat about a medium, semi-sessionable, carbonation is done very well for its style and for me, becomes slightly creamy. Overall, I would definitely have this one again.

Nitro. Creamier mouthfeel, lots of caramel malts and cocoa, not super roasty or hoppy in this serving type.

On nitro, poured into a shaker. Being on nitro, the aroma was mostly muted, but what did come through was a tobacco hint, an espresso note, and a slight grass aroma. Of course, aided by the nitro, this pours a beautiful black body with a very soft, marshmallow head (egg-white colored). The taste is a nice blend of medium light sweet and medium light bitter with flavors of espresso, grass, some ash-like quality, toasted grain, nuts, and chocolate milk. A touch of pine shows up at the finish, but it’s mostly espresso.which sticks around in the aftertaste.
