COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

ARH (735) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 23, 2014
UPDATED: AUG 23, 2014 On nitro, poured into a shaker. Being on nitro, the aroma was mostly muted, but what did come through was a tobacco hint, an espresso note, and a slight grass aroma. Of course, aided by the nitro, this pours a beautiful black body with a very soft velvet, marshmallow head - tan in color - which sticks around forever and leaves a heavy spray of lace all over the empty glass. The taste is a nice blend of medium light sweet and medium light bitter with flavors of espresso, grass, some ash-like quality, toasted grain, nuts, and chocolate milk. It’s a pretty slcik texture with a medium full body and an unnoticed / impossibly smooth carbonation. As it mellows out, some caramel starts to show up, along with a note of pine, at the finish, but it’s mostly espresso.which sticks around in the aftertaste with notes of cherry and dark chocolate.

Poured on nitro. Opaque, jet black. Ample creamy tan head. Deep dark expresso and dark chocolate, sausage and umami. Dark roasted bitterness, not much in the way of sugar and sweetness. Long dry finish, bigger body, creamy mouthfeel. Good.

355 ml bottle from Saveur-biere.fr, France. Black body with a thin light brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and roasted notes. Taste is bittersweet with chocolate and dark fruits, paired with coffee and roasted notes. Medium body with low to medium carbonation.

Pours opaque black brown with dark tan head. Aroma is caramel, chocolate, overall chocolate covered malt balls. It’s well hopped, so the chocolate combines with the bitterness for coffee and caramel in the mouth. Not quite the heights of black butte, but damn good.

Great roasty flavour, nice lacing. Overall a fantastice medium bodied stout with mild carbonation. Beautiful rich taste with hints of chocolate and coffee. Mild sweetness and a nice bitter note to it.

Pours opaque deep brown with barely present brown highlights, two fingers of fluffy tan head, good retention and excellent lacing. (4/5) Nose is dark roasty malt, dark chocolate, coffee, toasted grain, mild liquorice and vanilla. (8/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (8/10) Medium to full body, mild carbonation, dry and slightly warming finish. (4/5) A very good stout, and only slightly “American” - the ABV is somewhat higher than most traditional English stouts and there’s a tiny hint of citrusy tartness in the finish, but that’s the extent of its variation from type. I’d like to try it on a nitro tap, though, for some extra smoothness. (16/20)

Pours a nice dark brown, almost Guinness-like though the head doesn’t come close. Had a much more pronounced coffee taste than chocolate...not a bad thing. Left a bit more bitter taste than I wanted, Was actually expecting to rate this higher but 3.5 isn’t a bad score.

Bours black with a fine tan head. Nose is coffee and milk chocolate, a little caramel. Body is heavy and rich. Chocolate cake, coffee, spiced chai, a little burnt toast. Medium to heavy body, surprising given it’s not that heavy a beer. Creamy and viscous mouthfeel. A bigger beer than I expected.

[2/16/15] Draught at Cameron’s Inn in Half Moon Bay. Black with a nice brown head. Nice roasty aroma with dark chocolate and coffee. Bittersweetish roasty flavor with coffee and some dark chocolate. Creamy and slightly watery nitro mouthfeel. Good.
