Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

looks like anchor porter. please refer to that rating to see what i had to say about. moderate chocolate, not much coffee. decent malt backbone, roasted malt etc. fairly light mouthfeel, closer to what i expect from a porter. i could drink a bunch of these pretty easily.

Bottle: Id say the name is accurate... Obsidian, charcoal colored body with a soft, velvety mocha head that grows nice & large before slowly trending downward leaving lots of splotchy, sticky lacing behind. Lovely balance of roast & sweetness on the nose. Slightly milky, bittersweet cocoa nibs, burnt caramel, a hint of roasted barley, light brown sugar, & I get a moderately sweet cookie dough aspect that I love. More of a roast punch on the flavor; roasted malt, faint char, blackened coffee beans, adding a touch of bitterness but never losing the sweet, tame undercoat. Dark chocolate, a touch of faint milkiness, burnt brown sugar in small amounts. A tiny bit of anise lingering in the finish with a big aftertaste of slight smoke, roasted malts, & dark chocolate covered coffee beans. I would like a little thicker of a mouth feel, but it still has a decent amount of creaminess. Overall, a very nice stout to have around the house.

Pours black with a thick tan head that holds. Bitter cocoa and espresso aroma, with some molasses and stonefruity notes. Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Feels like silk down the throat. A little smokey flavours to compliment the well-balanced coffee and chocolate bitterness and raisin sweetness. Very difficult to fault

nose: oh my, this is heavenly. brownies, espresso, dates, figs, licorice. like a refined version of old rasputin palate: ...and the fat lady gagged! well, not quite, but this is very roasty, very hoppy, very bitter. think starbucks espresso with pacific nw hops profile. theres fig and date sweetness underneath, and nuance once you get past the heavy roast but it requires a bit of mental acrobatics to ignore the slamming smoky and herbal bitterness that grabs your throat. finish is like root beer and cigar and heavily oaked wine [im thinking syrah]. still, its worth exploring the corners of flavor this offers.

Bottle from Five Bar. Pours black with a small, firm tan head. Nose is very coffee forward with mild dark fruits and brown sugar. Taste is dark fruits engulfed in espresso bitterness and fresh coffee. Very brekky stout-like. Has that fullness and coffee focus one would expect in a brekky stout. Kind of like a less sweet Founders BS. Very decent stuff

Bottle at GBBF, 2014. Black pour with a beige head. Roast malt, raisin and dark chocolate aroma. Smoke, dark fruit and chocolate flavour. Easy going stout action. I like this.

Bottle bought at GBBF 2014. Opaque very dark brown to black, tan creamy head. Nose is nice roasted malt, dark chocolate, expresso coffee, creamy body and all nicely balanced. Taste is smooth chocolate, black coffee, roasted malt. Smoothly balanced and in harmony.

Bottle picked up at GBBF. Pours a very dark ruby/browm black with a tan head. Lightly sweet vanilla milk chocolate aroma (reminds me of sam smith choc organic). Light to medium body, Light bitter coffee, light dark chocolate, a touch of citrus hops initially then you get a ton of it - lemon, pine, grass and choccy lime. Smooth initially though. A decent beer, lots of citrus hops for a stout. A bit messy.
