This is a pretty darn good tasting beer. Who knew Deschutes could pull off a European style?

Bottle, another bomber bargain, $2.99 at the Bozeman Co-op. Clear golden-yellow pour with a finger of fluffy white head. Lots of carbonation. Mild nose of malt, grass, and grain. Clean pilsner taste with a nice emphasis on the malt, but good floral bitters to balance. Nice to find this late in the summer while the grass still needs to be cut.

Big bottle from grocery store. Looks clean and nice. Bright yellow, like a Bud commercial. Smells pissy, but in a good way. Tastes perfect! Light but hoppy and just nice and slightly sweet and perfect thickness. The greatest pilsner I’ve ever had. I am watching football right now and about to eat chili.

Noble hop nose is pepper-herb-lemon zest with some cheese and must similarity to Saaz more than Hallertau. Nose is also a little doughy and buttery... Baked cracker and toasted grain, malt is mostly clean. Medium-light body, somewhat syrupy, seemingly low carbonation, it’s way more chewy that it should be, and also a bit game-y in the nose, but the malt and hop expression is still pleasant.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle (BB Oct 15, 2014).
Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing.
Body is medium yellow.
Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, lemon, herbs), lightly to moderately yeasty (dough).
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation.
A simple and mild, but pleasant, rendition. Almost leans more towards plain ol’ Helles territory, but the bitterness in the finish is certainly ample. A surprisingly good effort from this brewery...my main complaint is the doughy raw yeast is about as strongly aromatic as the hops are (and more so as it warms). SN Summerfest is maybe a touch better/cleaner, but this is plenty good for chug-a-luggin’.

Clear gorgeous golden under a thin foamy white head. Nice nose full of grassy hops and a touch of peppery pine. Interesting flavor of bitter grassy hops, a kiss of floral hops, and a wee touch of orange rind. Bitter and peppery with a dry clean finish, with a hoppy after taste.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bomber - clear gold with a soapy lace - nose is lightly swee pils malt, some moderate mineral (with a touch of sulphur), some flowery hallertau, but also a touch of cheese rind hop character - flavor is doughy and medium-sweet at first - a bit watery, and lacking the crisp, defined malt character that makes a great pils - some dry mineral and moderate hop bitterness - some fruity, white grape character late - kind of muddled, really - a drinkable lager, I suppose, but really lifeless compared to better examples of the style.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Nice aroma of apricot, honey, lemon, and grass. Head starts out fairly big, but disappears quickly. Pale yellow appearance. Not much to look at. Flavor: grass, honey, hints of fruit. Grassy and slight dandelion bitterness linger without overpowering the honey sweetness. Indeed, the sweetness and bitterness blend so nicely together that it’s almost astonishing - no heaviness or anything overdone whatsoever. Mouthfeel is almost pristine - not as highly carbonated as a typical pils, but it feels so pure, almost like spring water. This is easily the best pils I’ve had, all things considered. Worthy of being in the top 50 worldwide pils.
