A favorite. 2013 release on draught at Deschutes Brewery & Public House in Portland 11/17/13, served in a stemmed snifter. Pitch black with little dark tan head. Aroma is oak, bourbon, and sweetened dark chocolate. Taste is roasty, toasty dark malts, cocoa nibs, cherry cordial, and oaky bourbon. Smooth, rich, and delicious. On draught at 2014 Holiday Ale Festival. 2008 vintage. Stronger flavor, smoother body. Incredible!

Deep brown/black pour. Great aroma of rye, brown sugar, oats, lots of smokey wood, dark sour fruit. Soft carbonation, fluffy carbonation in the mouth feel, carbony bitter dry finish. Taste has strong burnt mesquite wood flavor , molasses, strong smokey bourbon, oats, plum/raisin/bit of currant, chocolate and oak. Really great BBA stout with tons of scotch qualities.

2010 bomber shared. Black, small frothy tan head. Big molasses on nose, great oakiness - surprised so much barrel in there - chocolate and bourbon. Incredible taste, deep roastiness, big chocolate, bourbon and big oak. Rich stuff here, maxed out by more molasses. Medium/full body. Well rounded. Fabulous stuff.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
11.10.15 best after date.
Poured from a bomber into a tulip on 11.25.14.
A: I can smell it after popping the waxed cap. Licorice, deep milk chocolate, truffle, strong molasses, vanilla, and cocoa. Wow. This is so complex and unlike anything. It’s all blended so perfectly. The aromas aren’t muted either as they mix.
A: 1 finger light brown head that is retained fluffy and beautiful. Midnight black body with no red.
T: Oak, cherry, and molasses dominate. Vanilla, truffle, and milk chocolate are more subtle but still strong.
P: Creamy smooth. This isn’t as bubbly as other BBA stouts, which I like. It has perfect carbonation.
O: Oak is first, then molasses, slight vanilla, truffle, and chocolate in the middle. The tart finish comes out as cherry (from the cherry bark) and balances the sweetness along with the oak at the start. It does have amazing depth. I expected to get a lot of vanilla but this goes a different way. Oak wasn’t there in the smell but it comes out from the depths and asserts itself in the taste. Every sip seems different. Oak eventually fades to vanilla after dominating for awhile, but the middle and back end remain the same. As big as the flavors are, they’re not overdone. The balance is incredible. What an experience.
