4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 1, 2013 A: Pitch black body.. brownish edges... dark, dark brown with hints of gold in the light... decent lacing... solid retention
S: Rich chocolate, licorice and hints of coffee... subtle booze and bourbon lines the background.. slightly woody and earthy
T: Spot on... I think this is, hands down, the smoothest tasting beer... each flavor transitions effortlessly to the next... licorice runs throughout with coffee and chocolate taking up positions in the front and back respectively... nice semi-dry finish with a dash of bitterness
M: Surprisingly light... on the spectrum i’d place this in the middle of medium bodied... which is a very nice thing for a beer of this complexity
O: Hands down the best stout with decently large production on the market... i’ve had all the big boys

A nice, smooth, medium-full bodied Imperial Stout. Nice sweet oakiness, bitter chocolate, faint leafy hops, molasses and some Sambuca anise round it out.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2014 Bottle. Pours dark opaque black with large, fluffy, medium brown colored head that sits there like chocolate mouse before it diminishes to a small covering. Aroma has sharp vinous, bourbon notes at first with smooth caramel mocha behind it. Flavor has huge cocoa, coffee malts, balanced with a light bitter bite. Subtle bourbon is evident in the finish & aftertaste, but just enough to round it out and not too intense. Slightly oily mouthfeel, bubbly. Pretty pricey at $15/22oz though.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draft at Good Dog. Pitch black pour with a tight creamy brown head. Good amount of lace. Thick, rich and dark. Big cocoa, coffee and liquorice flavors. Additional notes of tobacco, molasses, peppercorns, black leather and charcoal grill. Feels a bit boozy up front but has such an abundance of wood tannins such that it finishes smooth and dry. Gigantic and fantastic!

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
On tap at the Heimat House. 2014 variety was black as night with a sweet liquorice and molasses finish. At 11% ABV you barley notice it. Incredible beer.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2011 on draft at Aces and Ales in Las Vegas. Small 3oz flight pour. Pours an opaque nearly black thickness with a very lasting mocha head. Aroma is a combination of anise, coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, and Brazil nuts. The taste is incredible with dark chocolate, anise, roasted nuts, coffee, and wood barrels. Somewhat booze finish, but not overdone. Medium full body, well carbed. Very good.
