UPDATED: MAR 1, 2013 A: Pitch black body.. brownish edges... dark, dark brown with hints of gold in the light... decent lacing... solid retention S: Rich chocolate, licorice and hints of coffee... subtle booze and bourbon lines the background.. slightly woody and earthy T: Spot on... I think this is, hands down, the smoothest tasting beer... each flavor transitions effortlessly to the next... licorice runs throughout with coffee and chocolate taking up positions in the front and back respectively... nice semi-dry finish with a dash of bitterness M: Surprisingly light... on the spectrum i’d place this in the middle of medium bodied... which is a very nice thing for a beer of this complexity O: Hands down the best stout with decently large production on the market... i’ve had all the big boys

2015 vintage. Aroma- Dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, licorice root, Mexican vanilla, wood chips Appearance- Inky black, completely opaque when held to the light. Half finger of brown foam. Taste- Dark chocolate, cherry wood, coffee, light vanilla, coffee crisp chocolate bar, pic price root. Palate- Thick and creamy, slightly acrid in a pleasant way. Average carbonation. Overall- Fantastic imperial stout, hard to believe it’s as strong as it is. The alcohol comes through only in warm finish. Impressive.

2012 vintage on tap at World of Beer (Charlottesville, VA). Aromas of charred, raisiny cherry, oak, soft vanilla, some cacao. Black with a fairly lasting cream-colored head. Dry, woodsy, some herbaceous flavors, almost minty, licorice, chocolate-covered raisins. Full bodied, sticky, lingering flavors of dried fruit, raw cacao, and heavy roast.

Wow. 22 oz bomber split with Marc and JoJo at CC. Pours black, nice tan, clingy head. Aroma of molasses, licorice, Bakers chocolate, vanilla bean, wood, roast, slight char, mellow coffee notes. Taste is a fantastic potpourri of bittersweet chocolate, treacle, anise, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and espresso. Mouthfeel is rich and full; thick without being chewy, smooth. Absolutely fantastic. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle 2014 shared. Black with big brown head. Blackberries, coffee, lots of roasted malts, cocoa, red wine, light vanilla, licorice, rye, a touch of smoke. Over medium sweet and medium bitter. Full bodied but not crazy so like the Surly Darkness we’ve had before. Very good.
