AllAboutStout (595), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Oct 5, 2008 Pours a dark burgundy, maroon in color. No head forms on the pour. Smell is dark fruit and some tartness. Smell is very nice. Taste is very dark, ripe fruit. There is a good amount of carbonation and a nice tartness as well. This is a surprisingly very good beer. I went in with a bit of reluctance due to the Abyss, but this is a very solid beer. Very nice and well done.
bierkoning (5077), La Tropica, Netherlands Dec 1, 2008 Bottle from mashmaster, thanks! Reddish brown color. Vinous aroma with caramel, cherries, marzipan. Malty, fairly alcoholic, quite oaky flavor with hints of marzipan and cherries. Sour with caramelly and coffee notes. Horseblanket. A good complexity, but just lacking a bit in balance. Nevertheless a great beer. riversideAK (1755), Shoreline, Washington, USA Nov 27, 2008 Strong aromas of oak, brett, and a little lighter aspect of tart cherries. Pours auburn with a thin head and sticky lace. The flavors has notes of tart cherries initially, a touch of sweetness. Oak follows and creates a dry sourness. Bretty funk comes in the finish and lingers with a touch of booze too. The tartness level is medium, the carbonation is rather bitey. rkuhnel (1195), Eureka, California, USA Nov 26, 2008 Darn. I paid a lot for this ($10) and was really hoping for something really special. From the 22 oz bottle this poured a cloudy dark orange with a small off-white head and very little lacing. Nose was of sour cherry and vanilla. Mouthfeel medium and somewhat fizzy from what I assume is the carbonation. Flavor is of sour fruit and the finish is a bit acrid. Overall it was interesting, but I had a little trouble getting it all down. For me a bit of a disappointment. Maybe aged it would get better, but this is the only bottle I had and at this price probably the last. Dogbrick (2348), Columbus, Ohio, USA Nov 26, 2008 Sample at the Columbus Ratebeer gathering at ogglethorp’s 11/20/08: This beer is a cloudy ruddy orange/amber color with a thin off-white head that dissipates slowly, leaving a ring around the outside. Stringy lacing. The aroma is sour cherries and apples, plus touches of vanilla. Medium-bodied with flavors of sour fruit, yeast and earthy malt. Interesting spice character in the background too. The finish is fruity with a vinous aftertaste. Pretty enjoyable overall. RSRIZZO (1078), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Nov 21, 2008 Aroma is a sour fruit scent. Color is a deep dark reddish brown with good carbonation and a thin tight head. Taste is big, bold and sour. Starting with a medium body it goes down with a crisp twang. Finish comes in with a bold sour taste that has cheery and oak tones, then there’s a dry vanilla taste. In the after taste the sour feels almost sweet and yet dusty. This is an interesting sour its complex but yet its delicate and bold all at once.
