COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This strong scotch-style ale has high maltiness, full body, low hop bitterness, flavor & aroma, low-medium fruity esters, very deep copper color, slight chill haze, clean alcohol flavor balancing the rich and dominant sweet caramel & dark roasted maltiness flavor and aroma with a very low level of peaty/smoky character from the addition of small amounts of peated malt. Dark orange pour, slightly hazy with a lasting head. Nose is sweet and somewhat hot, with a rye/peat note. Black pepper and cardamon and a sweet but not cloying flavor. Some bitterness and spice note keeps the sweetness in check.

Tap. Pours clear red apple ros, small beige head, good lacing. Very light aroma, jolly rancher. Flavor is malty, a bit of cardboard, apple, medium sweet and little bitterness. Medium body, bit hot. Meh.

On tap at Boulder Strong Ale Fest (2014). Pour is clear amber-orange with a small white head and decent lacing. Dark fruity, caramelly, bready, toffee, red licorice, and lightly smoky aroma. Taste is smoky, toffee, caramel, light wood, raisins, plums, fruit, and meat drippings with a light alcoholic finish. Slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Kind-of weird.

On tap @ Boulder Strong Ale Fest 2014. Pours an orangish brown appearance with a nice tan head. Caramel and nuttiness in the nose. Fair amount of toast and a touch of fruits. Slightly doughy flavor. Dull caramel. A bit of fruit. Alcohol seemed a bit too much. Ok but disappointing.

Tap at Town Hall Lanes. Mostly clear rich orange pour with a white head. Malt and peat on the nose and taste. Sweet but not overly so. Pretty darn good.

On draft. Pour is dark amber. A slight bit of peat in the finish. Decent to good taste throughout. Would get again but I think I prefer the Deadhead double here. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at the Champaign location. Pours a deep reddish brown with an offwhite head. On the nose, mildly sweet and very clean, no fruitiness. Also, no perceptible smoke here either. Light almond notes in the nose. On tasting, crisp and quite clean. Some noticeable alcohol warmth comes through, medium creamy and balanced. Much drier than anticipated. Could use a bit more body and sweetness overall, still a very well made beer that drinks more like an 80/-.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub (Bloomington, IL). Pours a nice roasty carmelized brown with with fiery orange burnt edges. A big frothy light tan head sits atop, laces well and stays big. Aromas are toasty and sweet toffee malts, vanilla and carmale, a light touch of peat, dried fruits, creamy toffee and biscuits, sweeter cakiness. Initial is fairly fruity, surprisingly, a good caramel and toffee sweetness, cakiness, nice bitterness on the backend, touch of warming alcohol. Smooth vanilla, sweet bready malts. A touch of dried fruit, cherries and pear it feels like which is a little off to me. Finish is bigger, bitter and a bit warming. An ok 120 that seemed a bit lost to me. Cheers
