Dark orange pour, slightly hazy with a lasting head. Nose is sweet and somewhat hot, with a rye/peat note. Black pepper and cardamon and a sweet but not cloying flavor. Some bitterness and spice note keeps the sweetness in check.

On draft. Pour is dark amber. A slight bit of peat in the finish. Decent to good taste throughout. Would get again but I think I prefer the Deadhead double here.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the Champaign location. Pours a deep reddish brown with an offwhite head. On the nose, mildly sweet and very clean, no fruitiness. Also, no perceptible smoke here either. Light almond notes in the nose. On tasting, crisp and quite clean. Some noticeable alcohol warmth comes through, medium creamy and balanced. Much drier than anticipated. Could use a bit more body and sweetness overall, still a very well made beer that drinks more like an 80/-.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sampled on tap at the brewpub (Bloomington, IL). Pours a nice roasty carmelized brown with with fiery orange burnt edges. A big frothy light tan head sits atop, laces well and stays big. Aromas are toasty and sweet toffee malts, vanilla and carmale, a light touch of peat, dried fruits, creamy toffee and biscuits, sweeter cakiness. Initial is fairly fruity, surprisingly, a good caramel and toffee sweetness, cakiness, nice bitterness on the backend, touch of warming alcohol. Smooth vanilla, sweet bready malts. A touch of dried fruit, cherries and pear it feels like which is a little off to me. Finish is bigger, bitter and a bit warming. An ok 120 that seemed a bit lost to me. Cheers
