COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is a rare ’Sticke Alt’ originating from Düsseldorf. ’Sticke’, or ’secret’, means the brewery does not reveal its recipe. It is an ale but is fermented at colder temperatures like a lager. It is more intense than a regular altbier. The brew is full-bodied and well-hopped, with a great balance between bitterness and nutty-malty sweetness, overlaid by strong notes of caramel and roasted malts. It is dark-copper in color, has the flavor complexity of an ale, the noble hop bouquet and creamy head of a Pils, and the clean, mellow-smooth finish of an Oktoberfest.

This version is Alternate Route/Altercation aged in cask with cocoa nibs.

Draft at Destihl. This was actually done in the keg this time. Pours a deep brown with an offwhite head. The nose is earthy, moreso than the base beer. Hops are more subdued. Rich malt and faint cocoa comes as it warms. On tasting, moderate cocoa richness balances the bitterness overall. Really clean and interesting. I really like the interplay of the nibs with the base beer a lot. Really cool and well done!

Cask pour on tap at Destihl’s 1st Barrel And Firkin Fest (Normal, IL). Pours a rich deeper brownish hue touches of ruby glow, with frothy loose offwhite head that dies to a small ring, laces small. Aromas are cocoa and biscuits, gentle sweetness, bakers chocolate is dry and dark, with toast, gentle spice, with mellow sweetness, toffee and toast. Gentle biscuits, mellow darkness and cocoa. Initial is mellow, lighter end of medium bodied, cocoa dryness and touches of toast and toffee. Mellow dry hops, touches of biscuit, with mellow cocoa, toast, caramel and carmelized malts. Some bready elements, some touches of dried oranges. Gentle cocoa and dry gentle hops, carmelization and toast into the finish. Solid.
